Winthrop hands Bucs loss in series opener

Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop scored a pair of first inning runs and steadily pulled away for an 11-1 win over Charleston Southern on Friday night in the Big South series opener at Winthrop Ballpark.

Winthrop (24-20, 9-7) piled up 15 hits and had 10 RBIs as a team to hand CSU starter Evan Raynor (L, 4-5) the loss. Raynor worked only four innings, striking out three and walking four.

CSU's Chris Singleton hit a solo home run in the second at-bat of the game to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead, but CSU (15-28, 3-13) could not get going against WU starter Sam Kmiec (W, 5-4) despite some early hits. Kmiec scattered seven hits and struck out eight.

Roger Gonzalez and Mitch Spires each had three hits and two RBIs for the Eagles, while Kyle Edwards hit a solo home run. Gonzalez' two-run double in the fourth broke open what was a 3-1 game at the time.

Sly Edwards was 2-for-4 to lead the CSU offense.

The teams meet again on Saturday at 6 p.m.
