Buccaneers downed in Saturday afternoon pitchers' duel, 1-0

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. - Charleston Southern's ninth-inning rally was cut short, first by a lengthy rain delay, and then by the Longwood pitching staff as the Buccaneers fell in the second game of the weekend series against the Lancers, 1-0.

The Bucs (10-6, 0-2) put two on with two out against LWU starter Cody Wager (3-2) in the ninth inning as Jason Miller singled and Mike Sconzo reached on an error to keep the game alive. Following a two-hour and 15-minute weather delay, Sconzo stole second base to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. However, Longwood (8-11, 2-0) reliever Michael Catlin (S, 2) retired Ryan Stoudemire for the final out to close out the contest for the Lancers.

Nik Constantakos and Wager conducted a classic pitchers' duel over the first five innings of the game at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium. Constantakos struck out the first four Longwood batters and five of the first seven to pace the Bucs early in the contest. The CSU freshman right-hander tied a season-high with eight strikeouts and went five innings before surrendering the ball to Wil Hartsell (1-3) to start the sixth.

The Lancers pushed the lone run of the game across in the frame as Carlos Garrido connected on a two-out RBI single scoring Alex Lewis to give Longwood the 1-0 lead.

Wager, meanwhile, carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the CSU offense before Tyler Kinney's pinch-hit single to right field ended the effort. Kyle Vesnesky followed with a single through the right side to put two Bucs on, but Wager was able to get a strikeout to end the CSU at-bat.

Cody Smith pitched the Bucs out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth with a strikeout and a line drive corralled by Chris Singleton in centerfield to send the game to CSU's final swings.

Miller connected on a one-out single to right prompting the Longwood pitching change with Catlin coming in to close out the contest. After a strikeout, Sconzo reached on a two-out error by the LWU third baseman putting runners at the corners.

Sconzo recorded his first stolen base of the season following the delay to put the Bucs in scoring position before Catlin closed out the contest.

Buccaneer Notables

  • Jason Miller's ninth-inning single kept his hitting streak alive as he equaled Mike Sconzo with the longest hitting streak by a Buccaneer in 2017. The streak extends back to March 4 in the second game of the doubleheader against Hofstra and includes five multi-hit contests during the stretch.
  • Nik Constantakos continues to provide quality production on the mound for the Bucs in the 2017 season. The Jupiter, Fla. native leads the Bucs with 29 strikeouts on the season and has recorded eight strikeouts in back-to-back contests. For the season he has allowed three or more earned runs just once over his five starts on the year.
  • Brandon Gragilla's 10 game on-base streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneer designated hitter was unable to find a way on the base paths. He joins Sconzo (11) as the only Bucs to achieve a double-digit on-base streak this season.

Probable Sunday Starters
Charleston Southern is projecting RHP Kyle Dyson (0-0, 3.65 ERA) as Sunday's series finale starter. Longwood is expected to counter with RHP Zach Potojecki (1-1, 3.18 ERA).
