Bucs Unable to Hold Off Late High Point Rally, Fall in Series Finale

Box Score

Charleston, S.C. - Though they led most of the game, Charleston Southern (11-23, 3-9) couldn't hold off High Point (17-14, 9-3) as the Panthers scored three runs to take the lead in the eighth inning and win 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 3-1, High Point used a bunt single and a stolen base to put a man in scoring position with just one out. A single drove home a run, but a walk and another single loaded the bases. A double play ball up the middle allowed Josh Asbill to touch second base for the second out, but throw to first was in the dirt to keep High Point out of the double play, allow two runs to score, and give the Panthers the lead.

Prior to the eighth inning, the Bucs had been in control of the game since the fifth inning. In a scoreless game, Ryan Stoudemire hit a double that scored a run. He was followed by Christian Maggio who singled to bring home another run and give CSU a 2-0 lead. After a sixth inning home run let High Point cut the lead in half, Mike Sconzo gave CSU a 3-1 lead on a two out RBI single.

After surrendering the lead, CSU did not get a hit. The next six batters were retied in order.

Joe Johnson (1-0) was credited with the win for High Point. He worked one and one third scoreless innings with one hit and one walk.

Daniel Johnson (0-4) took the loss for CSU, pitching one and two thirds innings and allowing three runs on four hits, two walks, and one strikeout.

Rion Murrah (2) got the save for High Point with two perfect innings.
