CHARLESTON, SC. – Charleston Southern assistant coach Matt den Dekker has accepted a position in professional baseball.
In his short time with the Bucs, den Dekker along with Recruiting Coordinator Anthony Izzio helped CSU achieve the highest rated recruiting class in the Big South Conference by PerfectGame on National Signing Day, a class that currently sits in the Top 60 nationally and Top 20 among non-power five schools.
"We are thrilled for Matt and this unique opportunity to work with an organization that thought so highly of him as a player," shared head coach Marc MacMillan. "He had a sizeable impact on Buccaneer Baseball. From his playing days at the University of Florida to his time in Major League Baseball to now, his elite player development skills paired with his ability to communicate with players will be a valuable asset. More than anything, professional baseball is getting a good man who is a Christian, husband, father, and friend that I will forever be grateful to for his belief in me and our program."
A four-year letterman at Florida, den Dekker was a 1st Team All-SEC selection and a member of the USA Collegiate National Team. In 2010, his .358 batting average , 64 RBI, and 49 runs scored helped guide the Gators to the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. den Dekker was drafted in the fifth round of the MLB Draft by the New York Mets. He spent 6 years in the major leagues playing for the Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers, and Mets before retiring at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Prior to CSU, den Dekker returned to the University of Florida to complete his degree while also serving as a student-assistant.
"Although my time at CSU was short, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment," shared den Dekker. "I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of establishing a new culture for CSU Baseball while getting back on the field doing what I love. Thank you to the administration, Coach MacMillan, staff, and players for a great experience."
