OPENING WEEKEND
Charleston Southern opened the 2022 season against a Power 5 opponent for the third year in a row and the fourth since 2016 as the Buccaneers traveled to Oxford, Mississippi. It was also the first time CSU has opened the season against a top-5 ranked opponent in program history.
Â
CSU was unable to take a game in the series, falling 9-3 in the opener before losing 11-1 in seven innings on Saturday and 12-2 in eight innings on Sunday.
Connor Carter and
Ryan Waldschmidt each left the yard for the Bucs in the series, while relievers
Krishna Raj and
Connor Yoder stood out as part of a strong showing of the Buccaneer bullpen in relief over the weekend.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Citadel is coming off a three-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickson at home to kick off the 2022 campaign, marking the second time in three seasons the Bulldogs have opened the season with a sweep. Game one went in the favor of the home team, 8-1, while games two and three were much closer affairs. A five-run second inning in game two proved to be the difference in an 11-7 score line, and game three saw The Citadel finish the sweep with an 11-6 win.
Â
LONG HISTORY
The two sides have clashed a total of 91 times since the first installment in 1980, with The Citadel holding a 59-32 lead in the series. More recently, the two team have split each of the last six meetings after the Bulldogs took a 10-5 victory in the last meeting back in 2020.Â
