CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern baseball fell to Holy City rival College of Charleston Saturday evening with a score of 10-6 at Nielsen Field. Both sides had a six-run sixth frame, but two early runs from College of Charleston were the difference.
College of Charleston (33-15) was the first to score in the contest, getting one in the opening frame off a Sam Cochrane single to right to score Tyler Sorrentino from second.
Â
The Cougars doubled the advantage in the third with another run as Landon Choboy's single up the middle was enough to score Sorrentino for the second time in the contest but a big throw from
Ajay Sczepkowski threw out Cochrane at home to limit the damage in the stanza.
Â
The sixth inning was a big inning from both teams, as the Cougars put up a six spot to take a commanding lead to open the frame. Joseph Mershon opened the scoring with a two-run home run to right center before Sorrentino left the yard with a grand slam just a few hitters later to make up the Cougars' six runs.
Â
Charleston Southern (18-27) answered right back with six runs of its own to crawl back into the contest. The Buccaneer offense was held hitless until the frame.
Casey Asman's double through the left side scored
Connor Carter before
Hogan McIntosh's infield single plated
Jared Payne.
Tyrell Brewer,
Nick Rodriguez and
Connor Aldrich all had singles down the stretch of the sixth that resulted in runs, and the deficit was cut to just two.
Â
Things would stay 8-6 until the ninth frame, as a JT Marr two-run shot to right gave College of Charleston some insurance as they had brought William Privette in the inning before for the six-out save.
Daniel Padysak (L, 1-4) got the loss for Charleston Southern after giving up two earned across seven outs on two hits and three walks.
Kaleb Hill came on for eight puts and surrendered just a single earned.
Jerry Couch was charged with four earned and
Chandler Woolridge gave up the final two.
Connor Yoder had a perfect eighth frame for the Bucs as he continued to throw well in the late innings.
Â
Ty Good (W, 9-4) recorded the win for College of Charleston, hurling four scoreless frames and striking out five. Trey Pooser was charged with five earned in just 1.1 innings of work. Privette tossed two innings of perfect baseball, striking out five for his 12
th save of the season.
