Izzio accepts recruiting coordinator position at Tulane

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern baseball pitching coach Anthony Izzio has resigned from his position with the Buccaneers upon accepting another opportunity in the coaching business at Tulane. Izzio recently completed second season with the Bucs and played a key role in the blue and gold reaching the championship game of the Big South Tournament last month.

"I'm very appreciative of Anthony's time here and excited for this well-deserved opportunity presented to him," shared head coach Marc MacMillan. "Anthony was highly recommended to me, and I knew early on others would see what I recognized in him. He is all about person over player first, and Coach (Jay) Uhlman is getting a terrific person who will go above and beyond that which is expected."

Among his hurlers at Charleston Southern were R.J. Petit, a 14th-round pick by the Detroit Tigers last spring and current member of the High-A West Michigan Whitecaps. He completed his career in 2021 with a 2.79 ERA, the fifth-lowest single-season mark in school history.

This spring, Krishna Raj anchored the bullpen and led the squad with three saves and limited opponents to a .213 batting average, the lowest for a CSU pitcher since Petit's school-record .163 in 2019. Raj earned the prestigious Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence from the Big South as well as landing a spot on the conference's all-academic team.

In addition, Izzio recruited a junior college class that was ranked No. 5 in the country by the JBB as well as brought in a freshmen class that included recent Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America selection Nick Rodriguez.

Izzio is the latest in a rapidly growing coaching tree under MacMillan during his short time with the Bucs. This group includes Matt den Dekker (Minor League Coordinator for the New York Mets), Colby Bortles (assistant coach at East Carolina), Ladd Rhodes (recruiting coordinator at Nicholls State) and intern for baseball operations Braden Kail (volunteer assistant at Austin Peay) in addition to Izzio's acceptance of the recruiting coordinator/pitching coach position with the Green Wave.

A national search for his replacement will begin immediately as the Buccaneers turn their attention to 2022-23 in the third season under MacMillan. "There are a number of really good coaches out there and I've been fortunate to work with a few here at CSU. Some more recognized than others but many who are looking to get their chance. As with past hirings, I will approach this one with a clean slate and review every application."

If interested, applicants must apply for the position on the human resources page on www.charlestonsouthern.edu.
