Charleston Southern Falls Just Short at Home to Furman

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern football found themselves in a battle Saturday afternoon with Furman at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs took a lead into the final 15 minutes of the contest before ultimately falling to the Paladins, 24-19.

REWRITING THE BOOKS
Charleston Southern found a piece of Big South history Saturday afternoon, as Vinson Davis hauled in a pass from Isaiah Bess and took it 97 yards to the house to stand as the longest pass play to result in a touchdown in league history. The six opened the scoring for either team in the second half and gave CSU a six-point advantage.

DIBS ON FIRST TUDDY
The Bucs laid claim to the first touchdown of the contest in the first quarter to answer a Furman field goal. Roderick Hawkins broke the plane from one yard out take the early advantage on a drive that lasted just over two minutes. It took just six plays for Charleston Southern to find pay dirt.

SPREADING THE LOVE
The offense wasn't the only unit to find the scoreboard in the affair, as Shary Jefferson called in two points for the defense with a safety to follow up the touchdown in the opening stanza. The defensive score stands as the first of the season for the Bucs, but there have been multiple scores set up by a turnover forced by Zane Vance's bunch.

BABBUSH CONNECTS ON FIELD GOAL, AGAIN
The CSU placekicker continues to make a difference on special teams, connecting on a 28-yard field goal late in the third to make it a two-score affair in favor of the Bucs. Sam Babbush's kick marks the fourth-straight game that he has converted at least one field goal in a contest, a perfect four-for-four to start the season. The kicks continue to come in big spots as well with the latest being no exception, as his three points capped a six-play, 79-yard drive to push the contest to two possessions later in the game.

NUMBERS, NUMBERS AND MORE NUMBER
JD Moore made his name known in the CSU backfield today, amassing 122 yards on the ground on just 11 attempts though Hawkins laid claim to the lone score on the ground. Bess completed just five passes, but made the most of them as well, recording 123 yards through the air and the other Charleston Southern score. Davis' record-setting receiving touchdown added to his 105 yards receiving to round out the offensive numbers.

On the defensive side of the ball, Charleston Southern recorded six TFLs, Jefferson leading the way with two of his own to go along with the safety. Jerome Rice III recorded the lone sack for CSU but the biggest noise came with the four turnovers forced, as Garrett Sayegh and Jamal Johnson each recorded picks to add to Chevon Fields' fumble recovery.
