Bats Come to Life; Bucs Even Series with 17-6 Win over Lehigh

Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Southern (3-3) scored runs in seven of their eight turns at the plate as the Bucs' explosive offense helped them take down Lehigh (3-2) with a final tally of 17-6.

Cade Conway led off the bottom of the first of his four hits. He proceeded to steal second and third and scored on a groundout to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. A homer from Butler tied the game at one, but in the bottom of the inning, Peter Werth caused havoc on the bases with a hustle double and a steal of third that drew a wild throw from the catcher that allowed him to score.

Lehigh plated four runs in the top of the third on just one hit after drawing two walks and three hit batters. The Bucs got one run back as Alex Diaz walked, stole second, and was plated with a Conway single. Conway himself later scored on a wild pitch to bring CSU back within one.

A walk and a single scored a run for the Mountain Hawks in the top of the fourth, but a sac fly from Evann Long and a two out base hit from Conway tied the game at six. A Lucas Pringle RBI single and another sac fly from Long added two more for the Bucs giving them an 8-6 lead after five.

A clean inning from Evan Truitt set up a big inning for CSU in the sixth. The Bucs scored seven runs on six hits and three errors. Back-to-back doubles from Chandler Tuupo and Dakota Miller brought home three runs and RBI singles from Christian Bauman and Werth brought home two more.

The Bucs tacked on two more in the seventh starting with a long home run from Tuupo.

In the ninth, the Lancers capitalized on three walks to score three runs, but their rally fell short when Ryan Stoudemire came in from the bullpen to get the final two outs.

The Bucs posted season highs in runs (17), hits (16), RBI (15), doubles (4), stolen bases (7).

Evan Truitt (2-0) got the win for CSU with five and one third innings allowing one run on two hits, three walks, and one strikeout.

Brandon Coughlin (0-1) took the loss for Lehigh, pitching two thirds of an inning with one hit, two runs, two walks, and no strikeouts.
