CHARLESTON – The Buccaneers secured their second weekend series win in as many tries over a strong Lehigh team on Sunday by a 7-6 final score following the walk-off victory. The team trailed 6-4 heading into the final two innings of the game, but late game heroics lifted the team to the win.
Charleston Southern fell behind early in the game after Lehigh plated three runs in the top of the second. The Bucs were able to respond quickly as
Peter Werth had an RBI single to put them on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
In the third, the Bucs flipped the deficit into their first lead of the game.
Alex Urlaub hit a single that scored a pair to tie it at three.
Christian Bauman hit a sac fly later in the inning to score Urlaub that gave them a 4-3 edge after three innings.
Lehigh got back on top shortly during the fifth off
Anthony Ramirez.
Nick Timpanelli came in to finish the inning and threw a pair of shutout innings.
Dylan Matsuoka got on the mound in the 7
th inning after the team allowed a leadoff walk. Matsuoka turned in one of the best performances of his career over the rest of the game as he twirled 3.0 perfect innings, retiring all eight batters faced. The first he went against, grounded into a double play and he cruised through the next seven of them.
The Bucs showcased their ability to score and get runners on late in the game as they had multiple runners on in each of the last three innings. After stranding a pair in the 7
th, Werth opened the 8
th with a leadoff walk.
Aidan McAskie came in to pinch hit right after and sent a long ball over the right center fence to tie the game at 6 apiece.
In the 9
th, Urlaub drew a walk and
Chandler Tuupo hit a single up the middle to move Urlaub to second. Lehigh made a pitching change after, turning to one of their position players. His first batter faced was
Dakota Miller who reached after an error by the third baseman to load the bases. The first Buc to go to the plate was retired, but Werth drug out a load at bat that led to a wild pitch that scored Urlaub to secure the victory for Charleston Southern.
In total, the Bucs finished with 14 hits with Urlaub leading them with three.
Cade Conway, Tuupo and Werth each finished with two. Urlaub and McAskie each finished with two RBIs while Werth and Bauman contributed one apiece.
The Buccaneers now have their second contest against The Citadel of the year. This will be the Bucs' first road game of the year as it will take place at Joseph P. Riley Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
