NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern baseball team lost a lead in the ninth inning on Tuesday night, as the Penn Quakers overcame a 6-2 deficit in the ninth inning to stun the Buccaneers 9-6 at Nielson Field.
In the ninth inning, the Quakers (3-5) sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs off of Nick Timpaneli,
Collin Kratzer and
Tyler Henshaw to take a 9-6 lead. After retiring two of the first three batters, the Quakers proceeded to load the bases, forcing the Bucs to move on to Kratzer, who surrendered a bases-clearing double to his first batter to give the Quakers a 7-6 lead. The next batter hit a two-run home run that gave Penn a 9-6 lead and forced another pitching change.
Charleston Southern got two men on in the bottom of the ninth inning and the tying run to the plate; however,
Peter Werth hit a ground ball to third base to end the game. Charleston Southern took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as
Chandler Tuupo hit a double to center field and advanced to third on a fielding error by the center fielder. He came around to score on an RBI single by
Christian Bauman.
The Bucs used the long ball in the bottom of the third inning to add to their lead, as
Dakota Miller hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run home run that made it 4-1. Two batters later, Werth made it 5-1 with his first home run of the season.
Zac Robinson surrendered a run in the fourth inning, but that would be all, as his night finished after 5.0 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, one walk and one strikeout. Tampanelli was the losing pitcher, going 3.2 innings allowing four runs on two hits, walking three and striking out four batters. His record is now 0-1.
