ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern fell to Winthrop by a final score of 14-4 on Saturday on the road to allow the Eagles to clinch the weekend series.
Winthrop scored first with an RBI groundout for a early 1-0 lead in the second. Charleston Southern answered back with
John Emendorfer singled to center field to score
Lucas Pringle.
In the fifth, the Eagles tallied four runs to break the tie. The Buccaneers responded with three runs in the top of the sixth with
Nathan Martinez driving home a pair on a single to center. Later in the inning,
Blake Edgmon grounded out up the middle but scored Martinez.
In the bottom of the sixth, Winthrop tallied two runs and in the eighth, they scored seven to push the score to 14-4 which proved to be the final.
As a team, the Buccaneers finished with eight hits with Martinez leading the team with three and in RBIs with two. As a squad, they drew three walks and four hit by pitches.
On the mound,
Brady Bickett started and threw the first 4.0 innings allowing two earned runs. After him,
Drew Dawson,
Christian Krause,
Bryson Huwar and
Tristan Stephenson combined to work the final 4.0 frames with each allowing at least one earned run.
The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Founders Park with the Buccaneers looking to salvage a game from the weekend against the Eagles.
