CHARLESTON, S.C.  – Charleston Southern defended their home course and opened their cross country season on Friday morning at the CSU Buc Open. Martin Iriondo won the individual championship as well with a time of 19:06.50 in the 6K.
 
The Buccaneers finished with a team score of 30 points. They defeated College of Charleston who had 48, The Citadel with 74 and South Carolina State with 86 on the morning.
 
Iriondo claimed the title at the race, defeating Tinashe Bure who was the runner-up at 19:09.30. Collin Kleinhen took third overall with a 19:19.20. To round out the team's top five at the meet were Earlon Baker, Lin Scott and Elijah Pabon with their times of 19:28.60, 19:41.80 and 19:43.10 claiming eighth, 10^th and 11^th.
 
In total there were 17 runners from Charleston Southern that competed in the race with four of them making their Buccaneer debuts. Austin Jugenheimer was the top finisher for CSU and had a time of 20:14.70. The others among that group Zac Henderson (20:31.80), Brendan Hitchcock (20:33.60) and Simeon Henson (20:50.70).
 
The Buccaneers will be back in action next weekend as they head to the upstate of South Carolina to compete in the Furman Invitational with the races scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
