North Greenville runs past CSU, 49-21

CHARLESTON, S.C. - North Greenville rushed for 328 yards and totaled 508 total yards in winning their fourth consecutive game, defeating Charleston Southern, 49-21, at Buccaneer Field on Saturday afternoon.

Travis Mosley rushed for 176 yards and quarterback Bobby Pittman added 92 yards rushing and 180 yards passing as the Division II Crusaders defeated the I-AA Buccaneers for the first time in four tries. Running back Jay Cox rushed for 74 yards and scored four touchdowns for the winners. Charleston Southern falls to 1-8 on the season, losing their fourth in a row.

"Credit North Greenville for a fine effort," said CSU head coach Jay Mills. "Their guys really played hard and they executed very well. We're disappointed that we didn't play with more consistency than we did. We certainly didn't overlook North Greenville. We were 1-6 going into the game and we knew better."

Charleston Southern received a fine performance from freshman quarterback Collin Drafts, who completed 21-of-38 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns. Senior receiver Aaron Dunklin caught nine passes for 179 yards and two scores while Don Phillips added seven receptions for a career-high 144 yards. Charleston Southern, however, was limited to only 29 yards rushing, finishing the day with a season-high 460 total yards.

North Greenville led 21-0 at halftime as Jay Cox (11-74) scored twice and Pittman connected with Harold McFadden on a five-yard scoring toss. The Crusaders scored on their first possession of the third quarter, driving 71 yards on eight plays with Cox scoring on an eight-yard run with 10:13 remaining.

CSU got on the board with 7:07 remaining in the third when Drafts connected with Dunklin on a 45-yard pass, but North Greenville answered that score with a touchdown of their own when Pittman scored on a 26-yard scamper for a 35-7 lead with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter.

NGC's lead reached 42-7 with 2:22 left in the third period when Pittman hit James Crooks on a 44-yard touchdown pass. Charleston Southern scored with :30 remaining in the third when Phillips tossed a reverse pass 41 yards to Dunklin, cutting the lead to 42-14.

Drafts and Phillips hooked up on a 75-yard scoring pass with 9:25 left in the game to move to within 42-21 but the Crusaders nailed the door shut with Cox's fourth score of the day, a 20-yard run with 4:26 left.

CSU freshman linebacker Jonna Lee posted a career-high 14 tackles in defeat.

Charleston Southern will host Big South Conference foe Liberty next Saturday at Buccaneer Field. Kickoff for the contest will be at noon as the game will be televised by The Football Network. The game will mark the first-ever televised NCAA contest from a CSU venue.
