CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Lady Buccaneers stood firm against one of the Big South soccer leaders in Coastal Carolina, tying the Chanticleers 1-1 in front of a supportive home crowd Saturday afternoon. The tie stretches CSU's unbeaten streak to two, and provides a very positive ending to the regular season where the Bucs (3-12-2, 1-4-2 BSC) are 2-2-2 in the last six games after starting the season 1-10.
Scoring did not begin until the last ten minutes of regulation, when Buccaneer midfielder Lisa Cooper collected a Melissa Mantho header deflection to score her second goal of the season with under seven minutes left in the second period. Coastal (10-8-2, 4-2-1 BSC) took the resulting kickoff right to the CSU net, where Bobbie Parsons gathered an errant Buccaneer pass to shoot to the left corner and past goalie Miki Wilson 40 seconds after Charleston Southern's goal was scored.
Coastal took the momentum from the late goal into the extra periods, outshooting CSU 10-4 in the last 20 minutes of play, but with no goals to show for it. In fact, the Chanticleers outshot the Bucs 25-12 on the day, and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Today's contest was the season finale for both teams. Both will play again in the Big South Tournament beginning next Thursday, and could face each other in the first round, depending on the outcome of other conference games today.
