CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Lady Bucs breathed a huge sigh of relief
as they got back on the winning track, taking down Coastal Carolina
2-0 in their first shut out of the season, Wednesday afternoon at
Buccaneer Field.
Coastal now sits at 10-4-1 with a 4-2 mark in the Big South,
while CSU improves to 4-9-1 with a 1-5 mark in the Conference.
Freshman Mia Cederholm recorded three saves but was in on many
plays, helping CSU keep a potent CCU team off the scoreboard. It
was the first shut out of the season, and just the second time this
year that Coastal has been shut out.
CSU took the lead in the 30th minute, when Caitlin Gunyan
crossed the ball in from the far sideline and found a wide-open
Alyssa Clay who redirected it with her head into the corner of the
net for her first goal of the season. The Lady Bucs extended the
lead with just over two minutes to go when an Emma Mattson corner
kick found the head of Sarah Catenacci, who all but iced the game,
putting them up 2-0.
Coastal led the shot category 15-13 over CSU, but CSU had a 6-1
advantage in corner kicks. Charleston Southern will try to continue
on their winning ways as they go to Lexington, Va., to face V.M.I.
