CSU and Citadel Battle to 1-1 Tie

Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A late goal by The Citadel knotted the score at 1-1 with less than four minutes to play as Charleston Southern (3-3-1, 0-1) and the Bulldogs (1-7-1) battled to a tie after two overtime periods at Buccaneer Field Wednesday afternoon.

It was a battle in the midfield for the majority of the game, as neither team could gain solid possession of the ball to start an attack. CSU managed just five shots in the first half, compared to two for the Citadel. After 110 minutes of play, the two teams combined for just 24 shots, with CSU recording 15 of them.

Freshman forward Sarah Catenacci led the way with six shots, only getting one on goal, as she blasted a shot off a free-kick from 45-yards out, hitting the crossbar, which seemed to be CSU's luck.

The Lady Bucs did get on the board, striking first in the 61st minute of the game as Catenacci crossed the ball into the box where Lindsey Trexler redirected it with her head into the far corner. It was Trexler's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs would even the score in the 87th minute on a Kelly Hasselman cross that bounced around in the box, finding the foot of Rachelle Ornelas who put it into the goal.

In the overtime periods, both teams had chances to win the game as the Bulldogs had two long shots from 35 and 40 yards out that freshman keeper Jena Uvalle made diving saves on. The Lady Bucs had their chances too, with breakaways and crosses but never could get a shot past Bulldog keeper Emily Green.

The Lady Bucs are in the middle of a three-game home stand, playing Radford on Friday at 1 p.m., then staying home to face the College of Charleston in the Silver Cup Match at 3 p.m. The match against the College will be broadcast on www.csusports.com.
