Catenacci Strikes Twice, Bucs Win 2-0

Box score

Behind the offensive exploits of Sarah Catenacci (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), the Lady Bucs downed South Carolina State, 2-0, Tuesday to move to 7-4-0 on the season.

Things always looked bright for the Bucs in this encounter, as the team quickly and completely established its authority over the game. This authority was evident in CSU's wide advantages in shots (17-1) and corners (6-0) in the first half.

Yet the first goal would take some time, thanks largely to the efforts of State goalkeeper Alechia Brothers, who made nine saves in the first half. Brothers could only stem the tide for so long, however, as in the 31st Catenacci beat her with a straight on shot for the Mt. Pleasant native's third goal on the season.

The Lady Bucs have developed quite the potent strike force this season between Catenacci, fabulous freshmen Michelle Dennis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Marky Boyce (Woodbridge, Va.) and the veteran junior Emma Mattsson (Helsingborg, Sweden). Combined, the foursome have accounted for 20 of the team's 22 goals on the year.

All four factored in offensively for the Bucs on this night as well, with Dennis and Boyce each sending five shots Brothers' way and Mattsson directing two shots of her own toward the net. Rose Marie Senise (Staten Island, N.Y.) also took advantage of a second consecutive start by contributing four shots to the attack.

However, this night was clearly Catenacci's night to shine. One goal and a team-leading eight shots would prove to be not enough for her, as in the 73rd her header off a Jen Vroman (Piscataway, N.J.) cross eluded Brothers for Catenacci's second goal of the day, her fourth on the season, and her first multi-goal game of 2007.

Catenacci moves into a tie for third on the team in goals, with her four equaling the total of Saturday's offensive hero, Mattsson. Meanwhile, on the goal, Vroman notched her fourth assist on the season, giving her sole possession of the team lead in assists.

Freshman Alyssa Budros (Traverse City, Mich.) was given the start in goal Tuesday and did not disappoint. Her shutdown of the Lady Bulldog strike force of Tandia Taylor and Magaly Cerda notched the Michigander the first shutout of her young Charleston Southern career.

The Lady Bucs now have won three games in a row and have not tasted defeat in two weeks time. The team will look to keep these good times going in just two days when they play host to Howard Thursday at Buccaneer Field. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 P.M.
