Lady Bucs Record Sixth Straight Win, 2-1 at Coastal

Box score

Two Jen Vroman (Piscataway, N.J.) assists, finished by headers from Marky Boyce (Woodbridge, Va.) and Emma Mattsson (Helsingborg, Sweden), and the steady and at times spectacular goaltending of Jena Uvalle (Mt. Dora, Fla.) secured the Lady Bucs a 2-1 win over Coastal Carolina Wednesday, extending the CSU winning streak to a program record-tying six games.

Though Coastal came into the game with an unblemished Big South mark, CSU had the better of the play at the outset. After Sarah Catenacci (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Marky Boyce (Woodbridge, Va.) created some promising attacks by winning balls in midfield, the Bucs had their first scoring opportunity in the 7th minute. Jen Vroman (Piscataway, N.J.) supplied a dangerous cross that Coastal keeper Amy Haggard struggled to deal with. The ball rolled out to Boyce in the far box, who fired just wide of the Coastal net.

The Bucs kept up the pressure in the ensuing minutes, with Caitlin Gunyan (Rockville Center, N.Y.) firing a strong effort on the CCU net in the 11th minute, and a Vroman pass just eluding the final touch of a streaking Dennis.

The Bucs would be made to pay for not scoring on these opportunities, as it would be the Lady Chants who would record the first goal of the game in the 15th. The attack that lead to the goal seemed to be innocuous enough, but a shot by a Lady Chant took a deflection off a Lady Buc and landed right at the feet of Big South leading goal scorer Ashleigh Gunning. Gunning made no mistake, rifling the shot to the upper far corner of the net past a helpless Jena Uvalle (Mt. Dora, Fla.) to give Coastal the lead.

After Emma Humphries had the next best effort with a shot fired wide of the near post in the 22nd, play would revert back to the Coastal end. The best chances for CSU would fall first to Catenacci, whose strong effort off a turnover had to be blocked out of bounds by Haggard, and then Boyce, who drilled a low shot that seemed to have eyes for the far net, but Haggard intervened with a strong diving save.

Coastal stepped up the pressure in the half's final 15 minutes. Threats to the CSU net included Colleen Scholl's high shot which Uvalle blocked over the crossbar in the 36th, a Gunning header which landed wide in the 40th and a Humphries shot which Uvalle saved in the 41st. Boyce attempted to turn the play with a strong run down the middle of the field, but Emma Mattsson could not finish the play as she was unable to elude the final Coastal defender.

The rain that had been looming all day finally came as the second half began, and with the rain came a CSU goal. Vroman supplied a corner in the 47th that bent right towards several CSU attackers at the near post, and it would be Boyce who would get the final touch on the ball to deflect the shot up and over Haggard to even the game at 1-1.

Things would begin to get testy in the midfield following the goal. Coastal would have a good chance on a free kick following a CSU foul, but the CSU wall blocked the kick, allowing Uvalle to comfortably recover the loose ball..

Coastal followed this opportunity with a series of concerted attacks throughout the second half in the CSU box. The backline of Jessica Kim (Austin, Tex.), Brittany Bolick (Boone, N.C.) and Emily Danchak (Woodbridge, Va.) coolly dealt with the majority of these opportunities.

However, Uvalle would be called upon several times as well, and each time she responded to the challenge. Gunning first tested the Floridian in the 67th, but Uvalle denied her with a clean catch save on a rising shot that otherwise seemed headed for goal.

Coastal then had a ball loose in the box in the 74th, but Uvalle was on hand twice, first stopping Heather Haupt and then Amanda Gelsomino. Then, in the 77th, a recovering Bolick shut down the angle on Coastal's second leading goal scorer, Blair Monroe, leaving Monroe's only option a shot to the near post which a diving Uvalle cleared to safety.

Much like the Chants did to the Bucs in the first half, the Bucs penalized Coastal for not finishing off their opportunities. On a rare second half attack in the CCU zone, Vroman created another excellent opportunity when she eluded her defender toward the sideline. Vroman, CSU's resident assist artist, then found CSU's resident big-goal scorer, Mattsson, unmarked back across the field. Mattsson headed a sharp ball past Haggard into the far corner of the net for her eighth goal, and what would prove to be her third game-winning goal, on the season.

Coastal's one remaining attack would be shut down by Uvalle in the 88th, allowing the final seconds to tick away comfortably for the Lady Bucs as they secured their sixth successive triumph.

The Lady Bucs will seek to set a new record Saturday, and continue their ascent up the Big South Conference standings, when they travel to Radford to face the Lady Highlanders at 5 P.M.
