Bucs Strike Early, Deny Wofford 1-0

Box score

Behind a goal from Marky Boyce (Woodbridge, Va.) in the game's first minute and strong defensive play throughout, the Charleston Southern women's soccer Lady Bucs defeated Wofford, 1-0, Friday night at Wofford's Snyder Field.

For a second consecutive game, the Lady Bucs showed no ill effects from playing on the road, looking cool and composed as they took to the field. And, for a second consecutive game, the payoff on the scoreboard would prove to be almost immediate.

On their first attack of the game in the first minute of play, Caitlin Gunyan (Rockville Center, N.Y.) found Boyce in the center of the box. Boyce coolly controlled the ball and placed it on net in one clinical motion, striking the ball to the upper right corner of the net past helpless Wofford goalkeeper Katie McChesney at 41 seconds to stun the Terriers and give the Lady Bucs a lightning quick lead.

The goal was Boyce's second of the season and was two minutes faster than CSU's next quickest strike of the season, Alyssa Clay's (Littleton, Colo.) goal in the 3rd minute of last Sunday's encounter against Appalachian State.

The Terriers responded to the goal with some intense pressure, but the Bucs fended off several opportunities, including a free kick which was easily parried away by the CSU wall. One opening for the Lady Bucs came in the 14th minute when Michelle Dennis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took a chance from long range, with her curling shot falling just over the upper right corner of the net.

After goalkeeper Jena Uvalle (Mt. Dora, Fla.) calmly grabbed a Wofford corner in the 24th minute, the action would once more swing to the Terrier end of the field. In an extended period of CSU pressure, the Bucs nearly found the net on several occasions.

The best chances fell the way of Clay and Dennis. Clay's opportunity came as a result of a well orchestrated play involving newly substituted Christine Bethke (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), Dennis and Boyce, but her effort from inside the box was blocked away by McChesney. Dennis followed the effort with one of her own, getting in past Wofford's final defender for a strong shot on goal which unfortunately found McChesney's legs.

CSU's prowess at getting in behind the Wofford defense would continue early in the second half. In a span of two minutes, Emma Mattsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Dennis both managed to find themselves with just McChesney in the way of a goal, but a diving save by the keeper would be just enough to deny Mattsson, while Dennis nearly missed avoiding two recovering defenders.

The Terriers would step up their attack following these near misses, and several opportunities for an equalizer would present themselves. However, time and time again Uvalle was on hand to deny the Terriers, as her diving save in the 56th and a leaping catch save in the 67th enabled the Bucs to keep Wofford scoreless.

After Mattsson had a good chance with a hard shot that ricocheted off a defender in the 75th minute, Wofford continued their push forward in hopes of a late equalizer. Play was hotly contested in the midfield, with lots of physical play as both teams fought hard for possession. Wofford would threatened the goal, with Uvalle forced to make a diving save in the 83rd minute and the team having to clear away several late corners from the Terriers.

Yet the Lady Bucs would turn away every Wofford attack on this night, earning their first road win of the season and the team and Uvalle their first shutout on the year.

The next goal to accomplish? The team's first winning streak of the season, which the Bucs will seek to achieve in their final non-conference game before the start of Big South play, a 2 p.m. showdown Sunday at Furman.
