CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern stepped out onto the
court for the first time in 12 days, but hit the ground running
with a 101-49 win over the Covenant College Scots, Saturday at the
CSU Field House. The Bucs had four players in double figures
including 23 from both Kelvin Martin and Omar Carter. With the
win, CSU improved to 5-3 (1-0) while Covenant dropped to 1-11 on
the year.
Career highs were the trend for the contest, with three separate
CSU players adding personal bests. Martin poured in a career high
23 points on 8 of 11 shooting to go along with 6 rebounds. Carter
pulled down a career high 17 boards in addition to his 23 points on
9 of 12 shooting. Freshman Joel Lamb came off the bench to score a
career high 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Jamarco Warren chipped
in with 14 points and 5 assists. For the Scots, Reed Crosson had 11
points on 4 of 9 shooting, including three threes.
CSU didn't waste any time establishing a lead, as the Bucs
dominated from the start with a 23-0 run over the first seven
minutes. The Scots put their first points on the board with 12:24
left in the half, but CSU stretched their lead out to 32 after a
Martin free throw, with 4:30 on the clock. In the last two minutes
of the half, the Bucs managed another 9-0 run and went into the
locker room up 60-22
Carter missed just one shot in the first half, recording 17 points
and 11 rebounds in just 14 minutes. CSU was a sizzling 68.6
percent from the floor including 6 for 11 from behind the arc.
It was Martin's turn to take over in the second half, as he played
above the rim to score 15 of his 23 on 5 of 7 shooting. In the
early minutes, it was Warren providing the offense with five
straight points to put CSU up 74-27 with 16:50 left in the game.
The Scots came up with a 12-2 run in the next five minutes and the
37 point deficit would be the closest they would get.
The Bucs went on a 16-6 run to end the game behind Martin, who
scored seven points in two minutes. Martin's lay up with 11
seconds left to play put CSU past the century mark for the second
time on the season, with a final score of 101-49.
Charleston Southern cleaned up the glass Saturday, out rebounding
the Scots 45 to 25. CSU also forced 21 turnovers, as they continue
to improve on their defensive pressure. For the game, the Bucs
shot just over 55 percent from the field and 45 percent from three.
CSU will take the role of the underdog during their next game, when
they travel to play at Cincinnati on Monday, December 15th, at 7:30
p.m.
