A dominant performance in singles by the men's tennis team yielded the Bucs their first victory of the season, an important 6-1 conference victory over the visiting Liberty Flames Saturday at CSU's Tennis Courts.
After dropping the doubles point, the Bucs sought to the business of defeating the Flames resolutely in singles. In eight singles matches, six of which counted towards the day's totals, Charleston Southern did not post a single loss and dropped just one set.
The most thorough victories occurred on numbers four and five, where junior Chris Peek (6-2, 6-0) and sophomore Luis Maselli (6-1, 6-1) cruised by their respective opponents. Matters were a little closer fought on the first three courts, but Steven Dean (6-3, 6-2), Guy David (6-2, 6-4) and Grega Teraz (6-4, 6-2) all emerged with victories on numbers one, two and three, and all in straight sets.
The one set dropped by CSU on the day was from freshman Keith Whittingham on number six, where he fell 3-6 in his opening set. Whittingham would not be undone by the early troubles, however, and would run his CSU singles record to 2-0 by winning the match 3-6, 6-3 and 10-3 in a third set tiebreak.
Also picking up wins in matches that did not count towards the day's totals were freshmen Gui Rebolo, who was victorious 6-2, 6-0, and Thomas Mullikin, who won in a single set, 7-6 victory.
The victory moves the Bucs to 1-4 on the season and an even 1-1 in Big South play. Baker's bunch will now confidently head back into their out-of-conference schedule, as their next match will take place Thursday, February 28 at future Big South member Presbyterian at 1 P.M.
