Grega Teraz was recognized with three conference awards as part of a major award haul by CSU's men's and women's teams Wednesday at the Big South Conference's awards banquet.
Teraz picked up his first conference award as the flight number three singles champion. The CSU freshman posted a 5-1 conference record in Big South matches at number three, the best record of any player in the conference at that particular flight. Teraz also was honored for a 15-5 season record and a strong close to the season, which saw the Slovenia native win twelve of his last 13 singles matches, with his selection to the Singles All-Conference team.
Teraz also made the Doubles All-Conference team with doubles partner Guy David. The tandem had an exceptional season at number one doubles for the Bucs this year, winning 16 of 20 matches including their last twelve consecutively.
Other men's tennis players recognized included Murat Atilla, who shared the number five flight singles championship honor with Radford's Zack Watson by posting a 3-1 conference mark, Luis Maselli, who took home the number six flight singles championship with an unblemished 3-0 Big South mark at number six, and Steven Dean, who was selected to the men's Academic All-Conference team.
CSU's number three singles player on the women's side also was recognized, as sophomore Andrea Schutte was awarded the Big South singles championship at flight number three and was selected to the Singles All-Conference squad. Schutte won five of her six Big South matches at number three and won 11 of her 15 matches at the flight on the season.
Also selected to the Singles All-Conference squad was number one flight player, sophomore Zineb Hilali. Hilali posted a 11-6 mark in the regular season and won four of her six Big South matches, all of which took place at number one. Hilali finished the regular season particularly strong, as the Morocco native won eight of her final nine singles matches.
Also earning Big South honors were the doubles team of Aodhnait Lombard and Patricia Jaeger. The freshman-senior duo had an exceptional campaign together, winning all six of their Big South conference matches and 14 of their 17 doubles matches overall and 13 of their 15 doubles matches at number two. This earned Lombard and Jaeger both the doubles championship at flight number two and an inclusion on the Big South's Doubles All-Conference squad.
Also earning Big South recognition was Amanda Swindall, who was selected to the women's Academic All-Conference team. Swindall, a sophomore, has a career 3.90 GPA and has made the Dean's List in each of her three semesters thus far on Charleston Southern's campus.
Both the men's and women's squads will begin their respective conference tournaments tomorrow in Rock Hill on Winthrop's campus. The #4 seed Lady Bucs will be in action first against the #5 seed High Point Lady Panthers at 9:30 A.M., while the #3 seed men will begin their tournament against the host #6 seed Winthrop Eagles at 2:30 P.M. All matches throughout the tournament will be broadcast on the Big South Edge (subscription service) which can be accessed on the Big South's web site at bigsouthsports.com.
