A late night encounter between the CSU men's tennis team and Clemson went the way of the Tigers, 5-1, Saturday night in the next to last game of the regular season for the Bucs.
Though action was scheduled to begin at 5 P.M., the Bucs and the Tigers did not get to the business of tennis until 8 P.M., forcing the match to be contested indoors. The unusual start time and playing conditions did not deter the doubles team of Grega Teraz and Guy David, however, as Saturday night was quite alright for CSU's best tandem. Teraz and David's hard-fought, 9-8 victory over Clemson's Ike Belk and Rod Bizjak at number one improved their season record in doubles play to 15-4.
The win would be the only doubles win for CSU, however, as the Tigers posted an 8-2 win at number three over Murat Atilla and Keith Whittingham and an 8-5 triumph over Steven Dean and Chris Peek at 8-5.
In singles play, Teraz would do his part to aid the Buc cause once more, as the freshman overcame Ike Belk in another close encounter, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at number three. The win improves upon an already stellar 2008 campaign from Teraz in his first year and blue and gold, as the youngster now holds a 14-5 record in singles play on the year and has won 11 of his last 12 singles matches.
Teraz's win was the only win CSU could muster before the conclusion of play at midnight on Saturday. The other four completed matches would go Clemson's way in single sets, while the match at number six between Tino Elgner and Luis Maselli would not be contested.
The loss drops CSU's men to 11-8 on the 2008 campaign with just one regular season to go. That final test before the Big South tournament will come on Wednesday, April 9, when the Bucs will welcome Lowcountry rival College of Charleston to CSU Tennis Courts for a 2:00 match.
