Charleston Southern concluded action in Clemson's Spring Classic with a 2-0 afternoon on the Saturday, as the Bucs overcame Toledo and Division III nationally-ranked Emory by identical 4-3 scores.
The Bucs got off to a slow start against the Rockets, as Toledo would win all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. CSU would quickly bounce back in singles, however. Posting the first two wins for Mike Baker's squad were Steven Dean at number one (6-3, 6-0) and Grega Teraz (6-1, 6-2) at number three, who each won comfortably in straight sets.
After Toledo was victorious at number two, the decisive matches would be contested at numbers four, five, and six. The Bucs would deliver the two victories needed to secure a win, as Chris Peek (3-6, 7-6, 6-4) at number four and Keith Whittingham (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) at number six each rallied from losing their opening sets to emerge as victors.
CSU rode the momentum from this victory into their game against Emory, who entered the weekend ranked #2 in NCAA Division III. The Bucs easily beat the Eagles in doubles, as the teams of Guy David/Grega Teraz (8-4), Steven Dean/Chris Peek (8-2) and Gui Rebolo/Keith Whittingham (8-4) all posted comfortable victories.
The Bucs also did quite well in the marquee singles matches against Emory, as wins at number one, two and three sealed CSU's second successive win on the day. Dean (6-4, 6-4), Teraz (6-1, 6-4) and Peek (6-4, 7-6) all made it a two-for-two day on Saturday by following up their Toledo wins with wins against Emory.
The wins improved already impressive beginnings to 2008 for Dean and Teraz. The senior Dean now holds a singles record of 7-3 to this point in 2008, while the freshman Teraz moves to 6-4 in singles on the year. The number one doubles team of David and Teraz also moved above .500 with their Emory success, as the duo is now 6-4 on the year.
With three wins at Clemson the men's team is now 5-5 on the year and has won five of its past six. The men will hope to keep the winning ways going when they host Hampton on Tuesday at 1 P.M.
