3/11/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
The CSU men's tennis team rebounded from a morning loss to Illinois State by defeating the Coker Cobras 7-0, while the CSU women defeated Coker by the same 7-0 scoreline to cap a tripleheader of tennis this afternoon at CSU Tennis Courts.
In their second game of the day, CSU's men wer able to win by the most comfortable of margins against the Division II, Hartsville, S.C. school, as Mike Baker's squad swept their singles and doubles matches from the Cobras. Starring for the Bucs in the victory was freshman Thomas Mullikin, who posted the first victory of his Buccaneer career by defeating his opponent at number five.
Also victorious on the afternoon were the CSU women, who defeated Coker by the same 7-0 scoreline in their only match of the day. The win improves CSU's women's team to 5-2-1 on the year, is the Lady Bucs' fifth in a row and leaves CSU's women unbeaten in six home games in 2008.
CSU vs. Illinois State box score
The men would not post a similarly perfect day, however, as in a 9 A.M. match Illinois State would edge CSU 4-3. A sign of how close the match would be contested came in doubles, where the widest margin of victory, an 8-5 victory by ISU at number three, was still a closely contested affair. The other matches ended in 9-7 results, with CSU's Grega Teraz and Guy David winning at number one and the Bucs' Steven Dean and Chris Peek dropping at number two to secure the doubles point for the Redbirds.
Neither team was able to gain a significant advantage in singles, either. Five matches would be won in single sets, including three by CSU, with Steven Dean (6-3, 7-5 at number one), Grega Teraz (6-1, 6-3 at number three) and Keith Whittingham (6-2, 6-4 at number six) the Buccaneer winners. With the score tied at three a piece, victory would be decided by the only match to go to a fourth set at number four, where Illinois State's Daniel Tobar overcame Chris Peek 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to win the match for the Missouri Valley Conference school.
The 1-1 day brings the men's record to 7-6 in 2008. The men will return to action next with a conference match at High Point on Friday at 12:15 PM. The women will also travel to High Point to face the Lady Panthers at the same time, but before their return to conference play the Lady Bucs will face one more out of conference test, which will come tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at 1 P.M. when CSU hosts the Spartans of UNC Greensboro.
