A tightly contested Big South match between CSU and High Point went the way of the Panthers on Friday, as Mike Baker's squad was edged in the Bucs' first road conference contest of the year, 4-3.
Victory looked likely for CSU following the completion of doubles play as the Bucs were able to capture the doubles point, something they admittedly have struggled with thus far this season. The Bucs won two 8-6 matches at numbers one and two, with Grega Teraz/Guy David and Steven Dean/Chris Peek the winning teams for the Buccaneers.
David and Peek also were victorious in singles play. The two veterans triumphed relatively easy in their respective matches, as Peek recorded his fifth win on the year with a 6-3, 6-1 win at number four, while David improved to .500 at 6-6 in 2008 with a 7-6, 6-4 win.
The other singles matches would not go CSU's way, however, as High Point won them all, allowing the Panthers to rally and defeat the Bucs by the slimmest of margins. All Panther wins would come in straight sets, though Grega Teraz posted the greatest resistance in a losing effort, falling to Henri Mangin at number three 7-6, 7-5.
The loss drops CSU to an even 7-7 on the year and 1-2 in Big South play. The Bucs will get right back at it this week, a week in which the men's team will contest their final three conference matches of the season. Before Baker's boys return to conference play, however, they will face a non-conference foe in the form of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, who will visit CSU Tennis Courts Monday for a 1 P.M. match.
