The smooth day for Mike Baker's day began in doubles play, where both the men and the women swept their doubles matches. The dominant doubles tandem for each team, the number one team of Grega Teraz and Guy David for the men and the number two team of Aodhnait Lombard and Patricia Jaeger for the women, both continued their strong 2008 seasons by winning their respective matches comfortably. Teraz/David won 8-4 to improve to 13-4 on the year, while Lombard/Jaeger moved to an outstanding 11-1 with a triumph by the same score.
In singles play, the men came close to recording a clean sweep, as CSU was victorious in five of the six matches on the day. Steven Dean (6-4, 6-4) and Teraz (6-3, 6-3) improved to 12-4 and 12-5 on the year with their wins at numbers one and three respectively. Also victorious were David (6-3, 6-3) at number two, Murat Atilla (6-3, 6-4) at number five and Luis Maselli (7-5, 6-1) at number six. CSU's only loss was closely contested, as Chris Peek dropped the second set 7-5 and lost the third set 10-7 in a super-tiebreak following a 6-1 capture of the first set.
The women did not fare much worse in their own singles play, as CSU's ladies recorded wins in four of six singles matches. Buccaneer triumphs came at numbers one through four, where Zineb Hilali (6-3, 6-4), Lombard (6-2, 6-3), Andrea Schutte (7-5, 6-4) and Jaeger (6-3, 6-3) all won their matches. The wins improved Lombard, Schutte and Jaeger each to 3-0 on the year in Big South singles play and ran Jaeger's unbeaten streak in singles matches to an impressive ten. Much like the men, the Lady Bucs only singles losses occurred in third set super-tiebreakers, in which Nazli Kutuk fell 12-10 and Amanda Swindall fell 11-9.
With the wins, CSU's men improve to 10-7 on the year and 3-2 in the Big South, while the women are now 8-4-1 and an unbeaten 3-0 in Big South play. Both teams will face a stiff test when the two squads will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to do battle with the men's and women's tennis teams of Winthrop on Monday afternoon at 1 P.M.
