CSU's men's tennis team posted its third conference win in the last five days Monday, as Mike Baker's men overcame Winthrop 4-3 at Rock Hill, S.C. in CSU's final regular season conference match of 2008.
The win was CSU's fourth consecutive and the ninth in the Bucs' 11 matches. Several trends that have characterized CSU's improved play during this stretch remained true today and allowed the Bucs to post yet another win. Among them has been CSU's dominance of doubles play. By winning two of the three doubles matches, the Bucs won the doubles point for the eighth time in their last 10 matches after opening the season with just one doubles point win in their first eight games.
Winners in doubles for CSU today included the tandem of Grega Teraz and Guy David, who won for the tenth consecutive time in posting an 8-4 win at number one, and the tandem of Luis Maselli and Murat Atilla, who continued their improved play with an 8-5 win at number three.
The season-long strong play of Teraz as well as the aforementioned recent improved play of both Atilla and Maselli has also keyed CSU's recent success. Each continued their recent excellence by all winning their respective fourth consecutive singles matches on Monday. The wins by Teraz (6-1, 6-1 at number three), Atilla (6-1, 6-1 at number five) and Maselli (7-6, 6-4 at number six) allowed CSU to overcome losses at the three other singles courts and to post the four points necessary for victory on the day.
The win concludes CSU's Big South regular season schedule with
CSU standing at 4-2 in conference and 11-7 overall. With the
conference tournament approximately three and a half weeks away,
the Bucs will wait to find out their positioning for the
season-ending tournament back in Rock Hill. In the interim, CSU
will continue out-of-conference play, beginning on Saturday, April
5, when the Bucs will travel to face the Clemson Tigers at 2
PM.
