Lady Bucs Down Bulldogs 4-0

Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern's women's soccer team earned their first shut out as they took down cross-town foe The Citadel. With the victory, the Lady Bucs move to 2-1 on the season, having won both of their home games so far, while the Bulldogs are now 0-2.

Emma Mattsson led the offensive charge for CSU with two goals and an assist, while last year's Big South Freshman of the Year assisted on two goals. The Lady Bucs turned on the offense in the second half, holding a 13-2 advantage in shots in the second period, a 17-7 advantage for the game.

Briana Murphy started the scoring for CSU in the 22nd minute of play, when she took a pass from Mattsson and slid it past the goalie. Murphy's score, the first of her senior season, proved to be the only scoring mark in the first 45 minutes of action.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Mattsson found her first goal of the season on a break away as she slid it past the keeper, Whitney Nave, and into the corner of the goal. Mattsson would add the fourth and final goal of the day on a high-looping shot over the head of Nave.

Caitlin Wesnesky also got her first score of the 2008 season, coming in the 67th minute as she took a pass from Dennis, who had two assists on the day, and drilled it into the lower right corner of the goal.

The Lady Bucs will head to Conway, S.C. for the 2008 Big South Challenge as they take on Longwood (Sept. 5) and Georgia Southern (Sept. 7).
