CSU Splits in Final Day of Buc Invinte

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern split again in the final day of the Buccaneer Invitational Saturday, at Buccaneer Field. This time the Bucs got the best of the Campbell Camels with a 7-1 score before dropping a 2-0 contest vs. the Norfolk State Spartans. With the split, CSU moves to 7-9 on the year while Campbell and Norfolk State came out of the Tourney with 12-5 and 4-5 records, respectively.

In game one vs. the Camels, the Bucs had the bats working early, rallying for a two run first. Amy Trenkamp ripped a double to right field that bounced off the fence, giving CSU a runner in scoring position. Trenkamp advanced to third on a wild pitch, before Megan Hall hit a sac fly to take a 1-0 advantage. Gail Matsushima started a two out rally with a single, before Jamie Wellons helped her own cause with an RBI double and an early 2-0 lead.

Another two out rally in the second saw a Brittany Giannini double, followed by an RBI single for Megan Lombard. The Bucs continued to add their lead in the third, making it three consecutive innings with runs posted.

CSU stuck with the two out rally theme, this time with Wellons reaching base first, after her second hit of the day. Brittany York stepped up in a big way immediately following, with a two-run shot over the center field fence. York's first bomb of the season gave the Bucs a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth.

A scoreless fourth inning, led to a chance to end it in five for CSU. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases to start the inning. Wellons had an infield shingle for an RBI, followed by a sac fly for Ashley Fowler. The Bucs left two on base to end the inning, but not before pushing the score out to 7-0.

Wellons pitched six scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing only 3 hits in that time. The Camels managed one run in the top of the seventh, but Wellons and the Bucs held on for the 7-1 win.

Wellons also held her own at the plate with three hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Lombard had a multi-hit game with 2 hits and an RBI.

Game 1 Box

In game two vs. the Spartans, CSU started with a lead-off double from Megan Lombard in the bottom of the first. The Bucs however, couldn't convert on the scoring opportunity after a pair of strikeouts and a pop out.

Sondra Vetter was on fire to start the game, with 7 strikeouts and just two hits in three scoreless innings. She came across some trouble in the fourth, after a lead-of home run for the Spartans. Norfolk State would manage one more run after reaching on a single and scoring on a wild pitch.

CSU never could recover, managing only four hits on the game and stranding five on base. The best chance for a comeback came in the bottom of the fifth when both York and Melissa Adams singled, creating a first and second opportunity with one out. Two pop flies ended the inning, keeping the score at 2-0

From that point the game was a wash out. Already having bad weather for most of the contest, the game was called, to give the Spartans a 2-0 win.
