CSU Outhit by Radford in a Pair of Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern hosted the Big South leading Radford Highlanders in a doubleheader Friday, at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs couldn't out-hit the Highlanders, dropping 6-1 and 10-4 contests. CSU dropped to 24-30 on the year and 7-10 in the Big South, while Radford improved to 32-12 and 14-2 in the conference.

Megan Lombard continued her hot hitting with three hits and a homerun on the day. Lisa Rice and Gail Matsushima also posted three hits and an RBI. Jamie Wellons chipped in with two doubles and two RBIs.

Wellons got the start in the circle for game one, stranding two on base in the first inning after giving up a hit and a walk. A lead-off single from Matsushima started the bottom of the second, but a pair of pop ups ended the inning.

Both teams sent out home runs in the third inning, but a three run inning for Radford put them on top. An RBI single was followed up by a two run homer and did the damage for the Highlanders. Lombard answered with a solo homerun of her own in the bottom of the inning, making it her third homer in the last six games.

CSU came up with lead-off hits in the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn't manage any runs. The Bucs had two on and no outs in the sixth, but three straight pop ups spoiled the scoring opportunity. Radford was also held scoreless over three innings keeping it at a 3-1 deficit for CSU heading into the seventh.

The Highlanders looked to put it out of reach in the final inning, with another three runs added to the lead. The Bucs tried to start the comeback with a lead-off single from Lisa Rice, but a double play helped to end the inning and the game with a final 6-1 score.

Game One Box

Radford picked up where they left off, carrying over from the seventh inning in game one to post two runs in the first inning of game two. CSU fired right back however, posting a run of their own.

Another three run third for the Highlanders made it 5-1, but again the Bucs responded with two runs for a 5-3 score. Amy Trenkamp started the inning with a double to right center, followed by Megan Hall reaching on an error. Matsushima and Rice capped off the inning with RBI singles to cut the lead to two.

CSU couldn't string any hits together over the next three innings, while Radford added one more run for a 6-3 score heading into the seventh. Again the Highlanders put it out of reach in the top of the seventh with four runs on four hits and one Buccaneer error.

A pair of doubles from Hall and Wellons in the bottom of the seventh scored a run, but it was too little too late. After a popup and a strikeout, the comeback was cut short with a final score of 10-4.

Wellons picked up her second loss of the day after two and a third innings pitched.
