Warren Lifts CSU over Presbyterian College in a 79-73 Overtime Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jamarco Warren tied his career high with 37 points, helping Charleston Southern to take a 79-73 victory in overtime over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, Saturday at the CSU Field House. Warren tallied 37 points for the second straight game in the Buc Dome, including a three with 2.2 seconds on the clock that sent the game into OT. With the win, CSU improved to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the Big South, while PC dropped to 2-13 with a 0-3 mark in the conference.

Warren hit eight threes en route to his game high 37 points, while collecting five boards. Kelvin Martin had a solid game, posting a double-double with 17 points on 7-9 shooting, to go along with 13 rebounds. Jeremy Sexton tallied 15 points on 7-13 shooting, six of which came in overtime. For the Blue Hose it was Chase Holmes leading the way, posting a team best 26 points on 9-16 shooting.

The game started with an early 6-2 PC lead, with both teams struggling to find the net in the first four minutes. CSU bounced back with a 7-2 run, capped off by a Sexton tip-in, to take their first lead of the game with a 9-8 score. The Bucs took their biggest lead of the first half with a 16-11 score at the 11:11 mark, thanks to a Sexton three.

The Blue Hose took back the lead on a Travis Smith three, to go up 20-18 with 6:51 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets from there, with multiple ties to follow.

The Bucs led by five with 1:43 remaining in the first half, after Warren hit his second three of the game, making it 32-27. Holmes took over for the Blue Hose however, scoring seven straight points to put PC on top 34-32 at the intermission.

Holmes continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring the opening basket to extend the PC lead. Warren got rolling in from there, hitting back to back threes to put CSU on top 43-42 at the 14:11 mark.

The Blue Hose managed to gain some separation as part of an 8-0 run, taking a 54-48 lead with 10:07 on the clock. The Bucs were held scoreless for four minutes during that stretch, before the 12th tie of the game came at 60-60 on a Warren jumper.

PC looked to have the game in control in the final minutes, with a 67-62 advantage after Travis Smith hit a pair of free throws with 35 seconds remaining in regulation. In the next possession, Jo'el Lamb kept CSU's chances alive with an offensive rebound and Warren delivered a three to narrow the margin to two. With 11 seconds on the clock, CSU fouled Travis Smith, who made one of two at the line, leaving the door open. With 2.2 second remaining in regulation Warren hit another fade away three to tie the game at 68 all and send it into overtime.

After trailing for the majority of the first 40 minutes, it was all Bucs in the overtime period. Sexton made a layup on the first possession to give CSU a lead that they would not surrender. The Bucs continued to hold a slight advantage, while the Blue Hose did not record a field goal until the 2:02 mark. After a Khalid Mutakabbir layup, Martin came right back to answer with a finish at the rim to make the score 75-72 with 1:28 remaining in the game. CSU put the game out of reach with a pair of Sexton layups in the final minute, en route to a final 79-73 score.

There were 13 ties and 17 lead changes in the overtime thriller, while CSU scored 20 points off turnovers and 19 second chance points.

Next up, CSU will stay at home when they play Big South foe Winthrop on Monday, January 4, at 7:30 p.m, while PC will travel to play Coastal Carolina, on Monday at 7 p.m.
