CSU Takes Down Presbyterian, 3-1

Clinton, S.C. - Exhibiting a solid defensive effort, the Charleston Southern volleyball team earned its first conference road victory by defeating Presbyterian College 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22) Friday, Oct. 15 in front of 519 fans at the Templeton Center.

With the win, CSU's second in a row, the Lady Bucs are 8-13, 2-5 in Big South play. PC (9-12) also holds a 2-5 conference record.

The Lady Bucs posted a season-high 15 total blocks, the most for the team since a 15-rejection performance Oct. 20, 2007 vs. Radford. CSU hit .189 Friday, while the Blue Hose had a .126 attack percentage. Presbyterian posted 54 kills to CSU's 42, but PC fell victim to 36 attack errors, including 21 unforced errors.

Three Lady Bucs entered double-digits in kills, led by Amanda Hill with 16. Hill passed two former Big South players, and is now 7th in Big South history with 1,715 kills.

Cori Holeman continued her hot hitting, connecting on 11 kills at a .429 pace. Kayla Klinger registered 10 kills, leading the way with a .career-best .562 hitting percentage, and nine digs. Hill posted a career high seven blocks, while Holeman recorded a career-best-tying eight blocks.

Amberle Trinder tied a season high with six block assists. Amy Nokes led with 36 assists, giving her 1,022 for her career. Nokes is the 7th CSU player with 1,000 career assists. Tricia Rodl collected 14 digs, while Emily Libertowski had eight digs.

Presbyterian was led by Presley Mabrey, who earned 15 kills, while Andrea Barman (12) and Alison Brown (10) added double-digits in kills. Mabrey contributed 12 digs for a double-double, and Kilee Ruppe led all players with 47 assists.

CSU trailed 14-12 midway through set one before regaining the lead with a 4-0 run. Hill sent down a kill, and the Bucs blocked two attempts for a 16-14 advantage. PC battled back, drawing to within one point at 20-19, and again at 22-21. Hill then posted a kill, and teamed with Holeman for a block to make the score 24-21. CSU converted its third set point, winning 25-23 on a Hill kill.

The Lady Bucs broke open a tight second set, going on a 14-6 rally for a 23-15 advantage. CSU capped the extended run with an 8-0 burst, featuring two kills apiece from Hill and Klinger, two Klinger service aces, and two Nokes-Trinder blocks. CSU took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 set two victory.

During set three, the Blue Hose held CSU to a negative hitting percentage, while hitting just .118 themselves. The Lady Bucs led, 10-9, before PC rebounded with a 5-1 rally for a 14-11 lead. CSU then tied it at 16-16 before the Blue Hose pulled away with nine out of the final ten points for a 25-17 win.

The Lady Bucs claimed the match victory with a 25-22 win in set four, fending off an early five-point deficit. Presbyterian led, 16-11 after a Brown kill. CSU rallied to tie the set at 19-all, and surged ahead with a 3-0 rally featuring kills by Klinger and Hill and a Nokes ace. Holeman earned the match-clinching kill.

Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "We're glad to get the win. We played pretty well tonight. Our blocks helped us out, as we did not control the ball as well as we would like to. Presbyterian has a good team, and had a great crowd."

CSU will next compete at Gardner-Webb Saturday at 2 p.m. in Boiling Springs, N.C. to complete the first half of conference play. The Blue Hose play host to Winthrop Saturday at 6 p.m.
