RADFORD, Va. - Charleston Southern posted its best hitting
performance of the conference season Saturday, sweeping Radford 3-0
(25-18, 28-26, 25-14) at the Dedmond Center. The Lady Bucs improve
to 10-15, with a 4-7 record in Big South play, while Radford (8-16)
falls to 2-8 in conference matches.
CSU hit .340 on Saturday, posting 50 kills, the most kills for
the team in a three-set match this season. Radford, coming off a
3-2 win over Winthrop Friday, hit .189 with 33 kills. The Lady Bucs
collected 52 digs to RU's 31, and served up six aces for the
match.
Two Lady Bucs earned double-doubles Saturday, as Kayla Klinger
registered her first double-double, and Amanda Hill posted her 16th
of the season. Klinger sent down a season-high 14 kills and added
13 digs.
Hill recorded 16 kills and 12 digs. On Saturday, Hill moved into
5th all-time in Big South history with 1,773 kills.
Tricia Rodl earned 17 digs for the third match in a row. Amy
Nokes dished out 38 assists and added eight digs. Cori Holeman
tallied eight kills while Amberle Trinder had six. Emily
Libertowski set a season high with four service aces.
Laura Waddell led Radford with 10 kills, and Desiree Aramburu
collected 25 assists. Katelyn Meeks earned 11 digs to pace the
Highlanders.
CSU got off to a fast start in the match, taking a 10-4 lead,
spurred by a 4-0 run in which Libertowski earned two aces. Trailing
16-10, the Highlanders staged a 6-1 rally to slice the deficit to
one point at 17-16. An RU service error and another Libertowski ace
turned the momentum back in the visitors' favor. CSU ended set one
with an 8-2 surge to win the set, 25-18. The Lady Bucs hit .385
during the opening session.
Set two saw nine ties and three lead changes, as the teams
battled back and forth. Klinger and Hill each sent down seven kills
during the second set. Radford stormed out to a 10-3 lead early in
the set. Following a Charleston Southern timeout, the Lady Bucs
scored five straight points, as Holeman and Nokes teamed up for a
block and then each earned a kill. CSU tied the set at 15-15 before
a 3-0 run by Radford made it 18-15.
The Highlanders led, 23-22 before two kills from Hill gave the
Lady Bucs a set point try. RU battled back for a 25-24 edge, and
led again at 26-25, but CSU earned the last three points for a
28-26 win and 2-0 advantage in the match.
During set three, the Lady Bucs utilized a pair of 5-0 rallies
and a .393 attack percentage on the way to a 25-14 win, clinching
the sweep. Hill tallied five kills and Klinger had four in the
third set, while the Lady Bucs defense earned 16 digs, holding RU
to a .065 success rate on the attack.
CSU Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "I'm glad we were able to
regroup today. Several key people really stepped up for us during
the match. We're happy to get the win."
The Lady Bucs return home Tuesday, Oct. 26 for a 7 p.m. match
against College of Charleston. Tuesday's match will be CSU's Dig
for the Cure contest, to raise breast cancer awareness. Fans are
encouraged to wear pink in support of the cause, and donations will
be accepted. Radford will play host to Southern Conference foe Elon
Tuesday.
