CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tyler Vick and Corey Deighan combined to throw five shutout innings in relief duty and the Charleston Southern baseball team used two huge late innings to rally back and defeat Furman University 7-5 Tuesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

The Buccaneers (2-2) fell behind early as the Paladins scored three runs in the first inning off a three-run home run by Will Miller. Paul Nitto crossed the plate in the second and FU had a 4-0 lead through two.

Drew Woodall manufactured a run in the bottom of the third for CSU, but J.B. Jenkins went deep in the top of fourth to maintain the four-run advantage for Furman.

The Paladins (0-4) removed starting pitcher Nate Smith heading into the sixth after he allowed just one run on two hits.

Bobby Lyne relieved Smith and allowed Charleston Southern to have a huge sixth inning.

Lyne was able to record the first two outs without allowing a run, but the Buccaneers touched up the Paladin reliever for four two-out runs to tie the game at 5-5.

Nick Chinners broke the tie when he blasted a home run over the right field wall in the home half of the eighth inning off Furman reliever Kevin Gottlieb. Tyler Thornburg made it back-to-back jacks after he also left the yard on the next at bat.

The Paladins could not muster a comeback in the ninth and CSU earned the victory. The win was a big one for a CSU squad who finished the 2009 season 0-9 against members of the Southern Conference, which included two losses to Furman.

Andrew White took the mound for the Buccaneers and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings. Vick pitched three innings of relief and never allowed a hit, while striking out two. Deighan (1-0) threw the final two innings and allowed only one base-runner after walking the lead-off man in the ninth.

Brantley Meier and Thornburg each picked up two hits in the contest, and the duo combined for two runs batted in and three runs scored. Chinners finished the game with two RBI and one run scored. Matt Still, Walt Quattlebaum and Drew Woodall also scored, and Still, Quattlebaum and Derek Smith all picked up an RBI.

Lyne came on in relief of Smith for Furman and he allowed four runs on four hits in just one inning. He was pulled in favor of Gottlieb, who allowed the two home runs to Chinners and Thornburg.

Jay Friedman threw a perfect eighth inning for Furman.

No Paladin batter recorded multiple hits, and they were led by Miller's three runs batted in. Jenkins had one RBI and one run, and Matt Bona, Will Muzika and Nitto all scored.

The Buccaneers return to action Feb. 26 in Game One of a three-game set with Virginia Tech. The first pitch of the first game is set for 2 p.m at CSU Ballpark.
