CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tyler Vick and Corey Deighan combined to
throw five shutout innings in relief duty and the Charleston
Southern baseball team used two huge late innings to rally back and
defeat Furman University 7-5 Tuesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
The Buccaneers (2-2) fell behind early as the Paladins scored
three runs in the first inning off a three-run home run by Will
Miller. Paul Nitto crossed the plate in the second and FU had a 4-0
lead through two.
Drew Woodall manufactured a run in the bottom of the third for
CSU, but J.B. Jenkins went deep in the top of fourth to maintain
the four-run advantage for Furman.
The Paladins (0-4) removed starting pitcher Nate Smith heading
into the sixth after he allowed just one run on two hits.
Bobby Lyne relieved Smith and allowed Charleston Southern to
have a huge sixth inning.
Lyne was able to record the first two outs without allowing a
run, but the Buccaneers touched up the Paladin reliever for four
two-out runs to tie the game at 5-5.
Nick Chinners broke the tie when he blasted a home run over the
right field wall in the home half of the eighth inning off Furman
reliever Kevin Gottlieb. Tyler Thornburg made it back-to-back jacks
after he also left the yard on the next at bat.
The Paladins could not muster a comeback in the ninth and CSU
earned the victory. The win was a big one for a CSU squad who
finished the 2009 season 0-9 against members of the Southern
Conference, which included two losses to Furman.
Andrew White took the mound for the Buccaneers and allowed five
runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings. Vick pitched three
innings of relief and never allowed a hit, while striking out two.
Deighan (1-0) threw the final two innings and allowed only one
base-runner after walking the lead-off man in the ninth.
Brantley Meier and Thornburg each picked up two hits in the
contest, and the duo combined for two runs batted in and three runs
scored. Chinners finished the game with two RBI and one run scored.
Matt Still, Walt Quattlebaum and Drew Woodall also scored, and
Still, Quattlebaum and Derek Smith all picked up an RBI.
Lyne came on in relief of Smith for Furman and he allowed four
runs on four hits in just one inning. He was pulled in favor of
Gottlieb, who allowed the two home runs to Chinners and
Thornburg.
Jay Friedman threw a perfect eighth inning for Furman.
No Paladin batter recorded multiple hits, and they were led by
Miller's three runs batted in. Jenkins had one RBI and one run, and
Matt Bona, Will Muzika and Nitto all scored.
The Buccaneers return to action Feb. 26 in Game One of a
three-game set with Virginia Tech. The first pitch of the first
game is set for 2 p.m at CSU Ballpark.
