BOCA RATON, Fla. - Charleston Southern took a 6-0 win over the
Virginia Tech Hokies, before falling 4-3 vs. the Jacksonville
Dolphins in their final game at the Parent's Weekend Tournament
Sunday, at the FAU Softball Stadium. The Bucs have now won games
vs. members of the ACC and Big East in non-conference play. With
the split, CSU moved to 13-12-1 on the season.
Megan Hall had a big day for CSU, posting four hits, three runs
scored and a homerun. Megan Lombard recorded three hits, all of
which were for extra bases, to go along with two RBI, two runs
scored and a homerun. Jana Matthews chipped in with two hits,
including two doubles and a RBI.
In game one vs. Virginia Tech, the Bucs got the bats going early
and often, posting three runs in the first inning to jump out to an
early lead. Hall and Shayla Cullum had back-to-back hits, followed
by an Erin Kegley three-run homerun to put CSU up 3-0.
Kimberly Hobbs started in the circle for the Bucs, bringing some of
her best stuff, to hold the Hokies scoreless. After getting out of
a jam in the first inning, Hobbs scattered three hits over the
remainder of the game, with only one runner advancing to scoring
position.
CSU added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a
commanding lead, using four hits and a Virginia Tech error to do
the damage. Trea Steele started things off with a lead-off double,
before Lombard sent out a two-run shot. Hall also reached base
with a single and would later score after a Hokie fielding error,
giving the Bucs a 6-0 advantage.
Hobbs continued to shut down Virginia Tech in the final two
innings, despite a late error in the game, to hold on for a final
6-0 score.
Hobbs picked up the win to improve to 4-4, after a complete game
shutout and just four hits in the game. Jasmine Harrell picked up
the loss after allowing four hits and three earned runs in an
inning of work.
Game One Box
CSU suffered a heartbreaking loss in their tourney finale,
surrendering a three run lead late in the game vs. Jacksonville.
The Bucs did manage to get the bats going with eight hits in the
game, but stranded six on base.
Lombard started the top of the first with a lead-off double,
followed by a fielder's choice that put two on with no outs. CSU
couldn't generate any runs however, ending the inning with a
groundout and strikeout.
The Bucs got on the board first with a run in the third, after Hall
sent out a solo homerun. CSU added two more to their lead, with
runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Jana Matthews and Erin
Kegly each provided RBI doubles, as the Bucs took a 3-0
advantage.
Jacksonville bounced back in the bottom of the fifth, getting back
in the game with a two-run homerun. The Dolphins kept the rally
going in the sixth, with another two-run shot, that proved to be
the eventual game winner.
CSU had a one, two, three inning in the top of the seventh, as
Jacksonville hung on for the 4-3 win.
Sondra Vetter picked up the loss for the Bucs to drop to 5-6, after
allowing seven hits and four earned runs in six innings of work.
Sarah Sigrest took the win to improve to 5-2, allowing eight hits
and three earned runs in a complete game.
Game Two Box
CSU will be back on the road this week, playing in-state opponents
S.C. State and USC Upstate on Wednesday and Thursday,
respectively.
