Box Score
CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern got their first win of the
Big South season, taking a 9-6 victory over the Coastal Carolina
Chanticleers, before falling 3-0 in game two Wednesday, at the CCU
Softball Field. Erin Kegley and Jana Matthews both sent out
homeruns in game one and both tied the single season CSU homerun
record of eight. In game two, Katelin Edwards threw a complete
game no-hitter for the Chanticleers to earn the win. CSU moved to
17-19-1 with a 1-4 mark in the Big South, while CCU moved to 17-18
and 1-1 in league play.
Shayla Cullum had a big day for the Bucs, going 4 for 4 in game
one, with three RBIs, three runs scored and a homerun. Kegley
recorded multiple RBI hits, with a two-run homerun and RBI double.
Megan Hall also chipped in with a pair of hits, tallying two
doubles in game one. Cacia Pierre paced the CCU offense, posting
three hits, three RBIs and a run scored on the day.
The Bucs started off game one swinging the bats, scoring three runs
on three hits in the top of the first. Hall and Cullum posted
back-to-back doubles to score the first run, before Kegley sent out
a two-run homerun, to give CSU a 3-0 lead. Kegley's homerun gave
her eight on the season, making her the first record breaker of the
game.
The Chanticleers bounced back with two runs of their own in the
bottom of the second, using a Cass Stuart homerun to cut in to the
deficit. CCU erased the early lead in the third, with an RBI
double from Jazmin Daigle, to tie it at three apiece.
Both pitchers settled in from there, with a pair of blank innings
to follow. Kimberly Hobbs started in the circle for the Bucs,
getting out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth, while stranding
three runners over two innings. CSU couldn't get much going either
however, with just two hits over four innings.
The Bucs lit up the scoreboard again in the top of the sixth, using
three hits and one Chanticleer miscue to score three runs. Again
CSU had back-to-back doubles, this time from Cullum and Kegley, to
score the first run of the inning. After Kelleher reached on an
error, Steele came up with an RBI hit to score one more. Kelleher
would later score, after some good base running and a double steal,
to take a 6-3 advantage.
CSU continued to pour it on in the seventh, scoring three more runs
after four hits. Hall tallied her second double of the game,
followed by a Cullum two-run shot to go up 8-3. Matthews kept it
going, sending out her eight homer of the year to tie her teammate
in the record books and make it a 9-3 score.
CCU attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, tallying
three runs on three hits. Pierre provided the runs for the
Chanticleers, using a three-run homerun to cut in to the lead. The
offense was too little too late however, as the Bucs held on for a
final 9-6 win.
Hobbs picked up the win to improve to 7-5, after scattering 11 hits
and allowing six runs in a complete game. Ashley Frederick took
the loss and fell to 9-11, after surrendering 12 hits and eight
earned runs.
Game One Box
CCU got on the board early and often in game two, tallying a run in
each of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead. A solo homerun from
Ashley Pisone did the damage in the first, followed by a Mecaela
Ballard RBI single in the second.
The Chanticleers added one more in the bottom of the fourth, taking
advantage of a Buccaneer miscue to score the run. After a two-out
hit-hit-by pitch, CSU gave up an error to put runners at first and
second. CCU took advantage, scoring on a Stacy Snellings RBI
single before Ballard was gunned down on the play.
That would be all the offense that the Chanticleers would need, as
CSU struggled at the plate the entire game. The Bucs put just two
runners on base, while failing to record a hit. CSU had runners in
scoring position in the first and fifth innings, but couldn't take
advantage.
Edwards picked up the win to improve to 8-6, after allowing no hits
and walking just one in the no-hitter. Sondra Vetter took the
tough luck loss and dropped to 5-10, after allowing six hits and
two earned runs.
Game Two Box
CSU will be back in action this weekend, capping off a stretch of
15 games on the road, with a three game series at Presbyterian
College, starting on Friday at 2 p.m.
