TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Derek Smith and Tom Burkett each blasted
their fifth home runs of the season, but there was too much
firepower in the other dugout as No. 6 Florida State University
defeated the Charleston Southern baseball team 12-4 Wednesday night
at Dick Howser Stadium.
CSU (16-24) was outhit 14-8 by FSU (29-9), and each team
committed an error.
The Seminoles were able to tack on two runs in six separate
innings, including five of the first six to take a commanding 10-2
lead.
Florida State got on the board in the opening frame with a
two-run home run by Stuart Tapley. CSU answered with one in the
second after Tyler Thornburg singled and maneuvered his way around
the bases to cut the lead in half.
James Ramsey knocked a two-run single to right center in the
bottom of the second, driving home Sherman Johnson and Devon
Travis, to give the Seminoles a 4-1 advantage.
Following a scoreless third, FSU tacked on two in the fourth and
two in the fifth before the Buccaneers were able to answer.
Burkett led off the sixth with a solo home run, but his
teammates behind him were unable to build off his momentum.
Tapley and Jayce Boyd each crossed home in the bottom of the
sixth to push the lead out to 10-2.
Charleston Southern attempted to mount a comeback when Smith
sent a ball deep over the right-field wall in the top of the
seventh, but two more from Florida State in the eighth and a lack
of hitting in the final two innings were enough to deny CSU a
comeback attempt.
Burkett and Matt Still each recorded two hits, and Smith led the
way with his two RBI. Four different Buccaneers scored a run.
Tapley and Ramsey led Florida State with three hits apiece, and
both batters drove home three runs. Travis finished 2-for-4, and he
scored three times.
Stew Brase (2-3) took the loss after pitching the first 4 1/3
innings and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits. Tyler
Vick gave up two runs on one hit in 2/3 of an inning, and Charlie
McCready shut out the Seminoles during his two innings of relief.
Corey Deighan pitched the final frame and allowed two unearned runs
on two hits.
Tyler Everett started on the mound for Florida State and threw a
perfect first inning before being relieved by Hunter Scantling.
Scantling (2-2) picked up the win after pitching the next five
innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits. Tye
Buckley, Geoff Parker and Daniel Bennett all pitched an inning of
relief, and Buckley allowed the two-run homer to Smith.
The Buccaneers return home for a three-game set with Big South
Conference rival Gardner-Webb University. The first game will be
played at 2 p.m. April 23 at CSU Ballpark.
