CLINTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern capped off a perfect weekend, taking a series sweep over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, after a 14-9 win Saturday, at the PC Softball Complex. Jana Matthews broke the CSU single season homerun record, sending out a grand slam in the first inning for her ninth bomb of the year. Matthews also had a multi homerun game for the second time of the season, sending out a solo homerun in the fifth. With the win, CSU climbed above the .500 mark with a 20-19-1 record and 4-4 mark in the Big South, while PC dropped to 13-12 and 1-7 in league play.

Megan Lombard had another big day at the plate, recording three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Megan Hall also kept pace with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. CSU had 13 hits on the day, with three other players recording RBI hits. Katie Anderson led the way for the Blue Hose, posting four hits, five RBIs and two runs scored.

CSU wasted no time in getting the bats going, exploding for nine runs on five hits in the first inning. Hall started off the inning with a single, followed by Shayla Cullum being hit by a pitch and Erin Kegley reaching on a fielder's choice. The stage was set for Matthews, who delivered with a grand slam homerun, putting CSU on top 4-0.

The Bucs kept going in the first with a two-out rally, starting with back-to-back walks from Morgan Dowdy and Kristin Kelleher. Melissa Adams came up with a RBI double from there adding one run to the total. Back at the top of the order, Lombard singled to left center to score two more. Hall, who started the inning with a single, capped it off with a two run homer, putting CSU on top 9-0.

The Blue Hose had their turn at the plate however, cutting in to the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. PC had three hits in the inning, but scored two on a Buccaneer miscue. Leslie Hensley, who started in the circle for the Blue Hose, took out some frustration in the second with a solo homerun, making it a 9-4 score.

PC continued to chip away at the CSU advantage, with three more runs on two hits in the fourth. After a lead-off single from Taylor Staten, Katie Anderson sent out a two run homerun. The Buccaneer errors started to pile up, with two in the inning that allowed one more run to score, for a 9-7 score.

The Blue Hose managed to score in each of the first four innings, adding one run in the fourth. PC tallied another unearned run, after Anderson had an RBI single, making it a 9-8 score.

CSU managed to get going at the plate again in the fifth, gaining some separation with four runs on five hits. Matthews set the pace for the inning, with a lead-off solo homerun for her second long ball of the day and tenth on the year. Kelleher, Lombard and Hall also posted RBI hits in the inning, helping the Bucs to take a 13-8 advantage. The Bucs tacked on one more run in the seventh, thanks to a Trea Steele RBI double, making it a 14-8 lead.

A walk and a hit in the bottom of the sixth allowed PC to score one run, but the offense proved to be too little too later. After scores in all of the first six innings, both teams posted blanks in the seventh, with CSU taking a one, two, three inning to hold on for the final 14-9 win.

Sondra Vetter picked up the win to improve to 7-10 on the year, after allowing three hits and one earned run in four innings of relief. Leslie Hensley took the loss and dropped to 4-7, after surrendering eight hits and 12 earned runs in four and one third innings of work.

After a stretch of 18 games on the road, CSU will return home to play the Liberty Flames in a three game series, starting with a doubleheader on April 9, at 2 p.m.
