CHARLESTON, S.C. - Nick Chinners had a career-best five hits and Brantley Meier tied the school record for most hits in a single season, but the Charleston Southern baseball team was upended 15-7 Thursday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

Chinners was a perfect 5-for-5 for the Buccaneers, and he also tied his career high with three runs scored. Meier finished 2-for-5 with a run, and his hit in the sixth inning gave him 80 for the season to tie him with Justin Fyle (2004-07) for the all-time mark.

Chinners' day moved his total to 79 hits on the year, and the two junior Bucs will have two more games to battle for sole possession of the mark.

The loss officially ended Charleston Southern's (17-36, 6-18 Big South) hope for a berth in the Big South Conference postseason tournament. The Bucs were narrowly outhit 16-15 by the Panthers (27-27, 13-12 Big South), but the road team was able to use three errors and timely hitting to pull away with three or more runs in four of the final five innings.

CSU starting pitcher Jesse Cadenhead walked the first three batters of the contest but only gave up one run, as he was able to settle down and get Matt Gantner to ground into a double play. Steve Antolik grounded out to end the threat.

Cadenhead got out of the early jam, and Charleston Southern used that momentum to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning of play.

Meier struck out to lead off the frame, but he wisely took first base on a wild pitch. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bentley Christmas, and later scored on a single from Walt Quattlebaum. Chinners singled before Quattlebaum drove home Meier, and he gave the Bucs the early lead when he scored on an infield single from Tom Burkett.

High Point tied the game at 2-2 in the second as Matt Fulginiti scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Geissinger.

Burkett led off the home half of the fourth with his team-leading eighth home run of the season. Jaren Sustar singled through the left side and gave CSU the 4-2 advantage after he was driven home on a sacrifice fly from Drew Woodall.

The Panthers responded with a four-run fifth to take a 6-4 lead. It look them just two hits to plate four runs, as Pat Rosario was hit by a pitch and Nate Roberts drew a walk. Gantner had a two-run double and Antolik recorded a two-run homer in the frame.

Chinners led off the home half of the fifth with his seventh homer of the season to cut the lead in half, but the next three batters were retired in order to stifle any possible momentum.

That would be the closest the Buccaneers would come to retaking the lead as they allowed three runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings.

Harrison Wilkins scored in the sixth and Chinners scored in the seventh, but CSU could not stay with the red-hot Panthers.

Cadenhead (5-5) started on the mound for the Buccaneers, and he took the loss after giving up nine runs on nine hits in five innings. He walked six and struck out two. Corey Deighan relieved Cadenhead and gave up two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 inning of work. Kyle Ward gave up two hits and a run in 2/3 of an inning, and Patrick Dolan allowed three runs on two hits in the final two innings.

Chinners led the way for CSU with his record five hits, but the Buccaneers also received two hits each from Meier, Quattlebaum, Burkett and Wilkins. Burkett had two runs batted in, and Chinners led the way with three runs scored.

Jamie Serber (6-2) pitched six innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits. He struck out five and did not allow a walk in the winning effort. Kyle Starnes allowed one run on four hits in the final three frames, picking up his first save of the season.

Murray White IV was 5-for-5 with threes runs scored for High Point. Pablo Rosario and Geissinger also scored three runs, and Gantner led the Panthers with four RBI.

The two teams will return to the field at 2 p.m. May 21. Tyler Thornburg (5-4, 4.54) is set to take the mound for Charleston Southern, while High Point will counter with Jaime Schultz (5-0, 4.88).
