CHARLESTON, S.C. - Brantley Meier recorded three hits and Jesse
Cadenhead continued his hot stretch, but Liberty University was
able to claim the series sweep over the Charleston Southern
baseball team with a 13-4 victory Sunday afternoon at CSU
Ballpark.
The Flames (37-12, 18-3 Big South Conference) plated multiple
runs in four separate innings and were able to blast 18 hits in the
winning performance. CSU (17-29, 6-14 Big South) recorded 12 hits
but could only dent the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth
innings.
The Buccaneers got out of the first inning unscathed, but
Liberty took control with three runs in the second and two runs in
the third.
Austin Taylor and Trey Wimmer led off the second with
back-to-back singles. Kenneth Negron drove home Taylor, and Negron
later scored on an error. Curran Redal singled in the frame and
later touched home on a wild pitch.
Michael Robertson and P.J. Jimenez both had hits to lead off the
third, and Robertson scored on a sacrifice fly from Nathan
Thompson. Jimenez gave Liberty a 5-0 lead after scoring on an RBI
single from Taylor.
Tyler Bream homered in the fourth to give the Flames a 6-0
advantage.
Thompson and Jimenez each scored on a two-RBI single from Negron
in the fifth before the Buccaneers could do any damage on the
scoreboard.
Meier singled in the home half of the fifth, and Bentley
Christmas put CSU on the board with a double to center field that
plated Meier as the home team began to show signs of life.
After Tom Burkett popped up to record the second out, Nick
Chinners roped a single to left field to bring home Christmas and
cut the lead to 8-2.
Charleston Southern blanked Liberty in the sixth and got within
two more in the home half of the inning.
Derek Smith got the rally started with a single through the left
side, and Walt Quattlebaum followed that up with a single of his
own. Brandon McKinney reached on a fielder's choice that sat down
Quattlebaum, and Smith and McKinney both scored on a double from
Cadenhead that reached the left center-field wall.
Meier flew out and Christmas struck out to end the threat, and
Liberty would make CSU pay for not taking advantage of another
golden opportunity to edge closer.
The first five batters of the seventh inning all reached base
for the Flames, and they crushed any thoughts of a comeback with
four runs in the frame to take a 12-4 lead.
Liberty added another run in the eighth and the Buccaneers could
not answer in the 13-4 loss.
Andrew White (1-5) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight
hits in just four innings of work for the Buccaneers. Stew Brase
entered in the fifth and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven
hits in three innings. Corey Deighan pitched the eighth frame and
gave up one hit and one run, and Patrick Dolan entered in the ninth
and gave up no runs on two hits.
Meier led the way at the dish for CSU with a 3-for-5
performance, while also scoring a run. Christmas and Chinners
picked up two hits each, and Cadenhead drove home two runs.
Liberty starting pitcher Dustin Umberger (2-2) threw five
innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. Carter Browning picked
up his third save of the year after keeping the Buccaneers off the
scoreboard in the final four innings.
Jimenez and Wimmer each had three hits for the Flames, and
Negron drove home four runs. Four different Flames scored
twice.
CSU will head out on the road for a 6 p.m. meeting May 11 with
Georgia Southern. Charleston Southern fell to the Eagles 8-6 on
March 10 at CSU Ballpark. Next up for the Flames will be a weekend
set with No. 4 Coastal Carolina University May 14-16.
