CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers Women's Basketball team steamrolled the visiting Southern Wesleyan Warriors 115-57 Saturday night, November 12th at Buccaneer Field House on the campus of Charleston Southern.
From the opening tip the Buccaneers were in full control of the
game. Junior, Rachelle Coward recorded the Buccaneers first nine
points as she hit three straight 3-pointers to open up the game for
CSU. Once Coach Julie Goodenough's Buccaneers got into the game
they set in their game plan and went to work. Having Anicia Dotson
and Lakeitha Alston down on the blocks, Goodenough looked to play
an inside outside game giving both post players a lot of touches
and letting them dictate the play from there. A few dump downs
then kick outs got the Buccaneers rolling and then let them put the
pedal on cruise control. At times in the first half Charleston
Southern would amass a 20 point lead.
As the Buccaneers grew their lead many of the starters and key players from last night's game got a much needed rest as Goodenough got her other players experience for this upcoming season. Getting her other players some reps definitely will add to the depth of Goodenough's already deep bench. With new faces on the floor the Buccaneers did not miss a beat with their offense and on defense got a little bit feistier as freshman Shambreka Jones added a crowd "oohhh-ing" block with only minutes remaining in the half. The Buccaneers got to the line nine times sinking 8 charity shots and converted a lot of transition baskets as well as pulling down 21 rebounds. Getting the ball down to the post and letting their big men go to work really helped the outside game for CSU as they went 8 for 15 from the 3-point line. As the half wound down CSU saw themselves in front 60-29.
The start of the second half started with a frenzy as Southern
Wesleyan's coaching staff got a technical only 20 seconds into the
second stanza. This was a frustration technical as the Buccaneers
proved to be too much for the visiting Warriors. After the
technical, the second half started as the first half ended as the
Buccaneers continuing their high powered, fast paced offense. At
the midway point of the second half Coach Julie Goodenough decided
to pull out a majority of her main seven players to get all of her
freshmen and sophomores a lot of experience. Leading the
Buccaneers in the second half was Abby Wharton and Whitney Collins
on the blocks. Both big men got their first career points along
with getting valuable playing time. Both players will be vital to
the Buccaneers in the long run and Coach Goodenough wanted to get
her players some touches. With the lead building and the game
coming to a close Charleston Southern continued to stay in control
of the contest and at no point looked to relinquish their enormous
lead.
Leading the Buccaneers in tonight's match-up in points and rebounds
was Lakeitha Alston with 22 and 8 while Kiki Rutledge, Helen Terry,
and Haley Pilcher all added three assists to lead the team. The
Buccaneers got scoring from 12 different players with four getting
double digits points. The Buccaneers also shot 62% from the field
and went 50% from the 3-point stripe. At the charity line the
Buccaneers shot 74%. On a night like tonight the Buccaneers could
not miss. Coach Goodenough's long hours on shooting have paid off
and she looks to have her players continue their form.
With the Buccaneers picking up two good home wins this weekend,
Coach Julie Goodenough will take her ball club on the road as the
Buccaneers travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on the Catamounts of
Western Carolina on Monday, November 14th.
