CHARLESTON, S.C.: Behind outstanding shooting
from the three point line, CSU defeated Stetson University, 73-64,
on Nov.21 in Charleston.
The Buccaneers were led by Mathiang Muo's 22 points including
6-10 from beyond the arc. Kelvin Martin notched a double-double
with 15 points and 10 rebounds, whole also leading the team with
seven steals. CSU shot 46% from the field (26-56) and 42% from deep
(8-19). Charleston Southern bested Stetson in points in the paint
(26-14), points off turnovers (26-7), and bench points (23-17). CSU
turned the ball over 18 times while forcing 26.
Stetson was led by Aaron Grahams 17 points and Joel Naburgs
seven rebounds.
Cedrick Bowen put the Bucs on the board first, thanks to an assist
by Kelvin Martin, CSU 2-0 at the 19:21 mark. A three by Liam
McInerney would put SU up three, 5-2. Stetson would exploit a
defensive mismatch in the post at the 16 minute mark to extend the
lead, 7-2. Matin would sink a free throw at the15:30 mark to bring
the Bucs with four, before a three by Adam Pegg would extend the
Hatter advantage to seven, 10-3. An Arlon Harper jumper at the
12:18 mark would bring CSU within eight, 15-7. A deep three by
Jeremy Sexton would bring the Bucs within seven, 19-12 with 10:16
remaining in the half. CSU would go scoreless for nearly five
minutes before a rebound and put back at the 5:18 mark by Martin
would make it 15-24 SU. Martin would sink one of two free throws to
bring the deficit back to single digits, with the Hatters up 24-15
with 3:39 left in the first. At the 1:40 mark Martin would
intercept an entry pass and take it the length of the court to draw
a foul, he would make the first to bring the score 16-26 CU. Arlon
Harper would send it a bank shot followed by a lay up by Martin to
bring the Bucs within six, 20-26. Paul Gombwer would end the half
with an aggressive put back to pull the Buccaneers within four
going into halftime. The Buccaneers shot 33% from the field the in
first half, while the Hatters went for 39%. CSU outscored Stetson
in points off of turnovers, 8-7, and bench scoring 17-13. Kelvin
Martin was tops for the Bucs with seven points, six rebounds and
three steals. For Stetson, Willie Green had six points, and Liam
McInerney grabbed a team high six boards. Both teams struggled to
hold onto the ball; the Bucs and the Hatters both had 13 turnovers
in half one.
Bowen would put the Bucs on the board to start the half yet
again, scoring a lay up at the 19:03 mark to bring the Bucs within
two, 24-26. Kelvin Martin would sky to the basket at the 16:40 mark
to keep the Buccaneers within striking distance, 29-32. Jeremy
Sexton would sink a corner three to knot the match at 32. Martin
would have back to back jams followed by a three by Muo to make it
39-40. Arlon Harpers shot off the glass would give CSU their first
lead of the second half at 41-40 with 11:42 remaining. Harper and
Grier would score back to back buckets for the Buccaneers to give
CSU their largest lead of the game at 45-41. After a SU three, Muo
would sink two free throws to put the Bucs up one at 47-46. After
exchanging baskets, Muo would hit three triples in a row to put CSU
up seven at 58-51 with just under five remaining. Muo would his
onslaught from deep, sinking another triple to give the Bucs an
eight point lead with just under two to go. Adam Pegg would step
out for the Hatters and knock down a three to shrink the Buc lead
to six, 64-58 with 1:02 remaining. CSU would hold off a late
Stetson attempt to come back, to get the 73-64 victory in a
thriller at the CSU Field House. CSU outshot Stetson 56%-48% while
forcing 13 turnovers in the second half.
