CSU Drops Pair of Games On Second Day of Wolfpack Challenge

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team fell to Stony Brook, 8-3, to open the second day of the NC State Wolfpack Challenge in Raleigh, N.C. Saturday, March 12. CSU then dropped a 4-2 decision to Fairfield in its last game of the weekend.

The Buccaneers posted a 1-3 record on the weekend, and are now 11-14 on the season. Fairfield moves to 4-4, while Stony Brook improved to 4-8 win the win over CSU.

Stony Brook scored six runs in the first three innings and added a pair of runs late in an 8-3 victory over CSU.

Taylor Chain went the distance for the win, allowing three runs on six hits. Kimberly Hobbs (7-5) drew the loss while yielding four earned runs on 10 hits in three innings pitched. Freshman Hayes Holdsworth, making her CSU pitching debut, allowed two runs on four hits in the final four innings of the game.

Kristin Kelleher went 2-for-3, walked once and scored one run. Jessica Brock recorded two RBI while Jana Matthews hit a solo home run.

Six Seawolves registered multiple hits for the game, with Gina Bianculli leading the way with three hits.

Similarly to Friday's game against Maine, CSU found itself trailing 3-0 after the first inning. Elise Fortier drove in Lauren Maloney with an RBI single, and Bernadette Tenuto followed by singling in Fortier. Bianculli made the score 3-0 by driving in Tenuto. Hobbs got Rossi to foul out to end the top of the first.

The Seawolves added one run in the top of the second, taking a 4-0 lead as Alyssa Hawley scored on an illegal pitch. With two runners on base, the next two batters lined out, stopping the rally.

CSU broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Matthews, her fourth of the season and second in as many games. Chain retired the final two batters in the frame, leaving the score at 4-1 in SBU's favor.

Bianculli answered Matthews' homer with one of her own to lead off the top of the third. Maloney hit a two-out RBI single to give Stony Brook a five-run lead, 6-1.

CSU inched closer with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, as Jessica Brock drove in Lombard and Kelleher with a single. The Bucs drew to within three at 6-3 after three frames.

Holdsworth entered in relief of Hobbs the fourth inning. She held Stony Brook off the scoreboard in her first two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one during that span. The Seawolves then added one run in the sixth inning, taking a 7-3 lead on a single by Tenuto, and then scored once more in the seventh for an 8-3 edge.

Lombard doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and Kelleher hit a single, but the game ended with Stony Brook earning an 8-3 win.

Charleston Southern took a 2-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning against Fairfield, and Morgan Dowdy was pitching a no-hitter through five. The Stags came back with two runs in the sixth and added two in the seventh for the 4-2 win.

Rebecca Trott pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits. Dowdy pitched the first five innings without giving up a hit, and allowed four runs in six and one thirds innings total. Dowdy pitched a career-high nine strikeouts, and Hobbs added one strikeout in relief for a team-season-high 10 K's.

Brock batted 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Stephanie Sbardella and Melanie Stickney had one hit apiece.

Tiffany Lawson batted 2-for-4 and scored a run for Fairfield. Kimi Kurata hit a home run, driving in two runs.

The early going proved to be a pitchers' duel, as a Brock single in the second served as the only base hit during the first three innings.

CSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Kelleher walked and then Brock drove in pinch runner Courtney Konyk with a two-run home run.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Lauren Liseth drove in a run with a double. Liseth scored on a CSU error, tying the ballgame at 2-2. Fairfield gained the lead for good on a one-out, two-run homer by Kurata in the top of the seventh frame.

Sbardella singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, as CSU attempted a rally. Pinch runner Holdsworth was stranded as Matthews and Trea Steele flew out to end the game.

The Buccaneers will return to North Carolina Tuesday, March 15 to take on the Pirates of East Carolina in Greenville. Tuesday's doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m.
