ECU Sweeps Bucs in Doubleheader, 4-0, 3-0

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina earned a sweep of Charleston Southern Tuesday, March 15 at ECU Softball Stadium, winning by scores of 4-0 and 3-0. ECU's Toni Paisley threw a no-hitter in game one, and the Pirates shut out CSU in the second contest.

East Carolina improves to 21-8 on the season, while Charleston Southern is now 11-16 after dropping five straight decisions.

East Carolina pitcher Toni Paisley (15-4) threw a no-hitter against CSU in game one. It was Paisley's first no-hitter of the season, and fifth for her career. CSU's Morgan Dowdy (4-10) allowed four runs on eight hits, going the distance for the sixth time this season.

For CSU, Stephanie Sbardella reached on a hit by pitch, while Ari Tedesco landed on first by way of an error. Kristin Kelleher received a walk in the third.

East Carolina was led by Suzanne Riggs and Sissy Jimenez with two hits apiece. Four Pirates scored runs and four recorded RBI.

ECU built a 3-0 lead with a three-run bottom of the second inning. Priscilla Velasquez led off with a double. Singles by Suzanne Riggs and Alex Fieldhouse loaded the bases with nobody out. Dowdy hit Jasmine Robbins, plating Velasquez. Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin and Kristi Oshiro followed with RBI's for a 3-0 Pirate advantage.

The Buccaneers mounted a quick rally in the top of the third inning, as Tedesco reached via a fielding error with one out. Tedesco then stole second, and Kelleher walked to put two CSU players on base. Paisley recorded a strikeout to quell the CSU momentum.

East Carolina threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but Jessica Brock made a tremendous diving catch on a bunt attempt. Brock then threw to Steele to complete the double play.

After a 1-2-3 Buccaneer fifth inning, ECU added a fourth run on a Sissy Jimenez single. The Pirates recorded a pair of hits, but Dowdy got Fieldhouse to foul to left field to end the inning with East Carolina leading, 4-0.

Paisley struck out two batters in each of the last two innings, and fanned Sbardella to end the game.

In the second contest, ECU scored solo runs in the first, third and fourth innings for the 3-0 total. Faith Sutton (6-4) pitched a three-hitter, allowing no runs. CSU's Kimberly Hobbs (7-6) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits.

For ECU, Jordan Lewis and Jasmine Robbins each recorded two hits.

The Pirates loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the first during game two. Jordan Lewis drove in ECU's first run with a single through the left side. Hobbs struck out Abby Wynne and proceeded to retire the side, working out of a jam while ECU took a 1-0 lead into the second inning.

Melissa Adams lined a one-out single down the left field line in the top of the third for CSU's first hit. She was then retired on a lineout double play to end the Bucs' half of the third inning.

ECU added one run in the bottom of the third, building a 2-0 lead on an RBI single by Wynne. Jana Matthews then made a pair of fine plays in the outfield, including a diving catch for the third out, to end the threat in the third inning.

Brock got on base with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, reaching by way of a single. She was then stranded after Sutton got Sbardella to pop out to second base for the third out.

The Pirates extended their lead to three runs at 3-0, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. CSU placed a runner on base for the third inning in a row, as Matthews drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth. A pair of strikeouts and a groundout ensued to end the frame.

CSU followed a three-batter East Carolina fifth inning with a scoring threat in the top of the sixth. Lombard hit a one-out double and moved to third on a Kelleher groundout. Sutton forced Steele to ground out, concluding the top of the sixth with ECU ahead, 3-0.

The Pirates had a rally going in the bottom of the sixth inning, with runners on second and third with two outs. Rebecca Lee grounded out to short to close the inning. The Bucs went in order in the bottom of the seventh, and ECU earned the sweep with a 3-0 win in game two.

CSU will next compete at Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. Tuesday, March 22, with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m.
