LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Buccaneers were held scoreless in all but
one inning as the Liberty Flames earned the 5-2 win in the series
finale to sweep the Bucs 3-0 at Worthington Stadium in Lynchburg,
Va., on Sunday afternoon.
The loss puts the Bucs at 10-11 overall and 0-3 in the Big
South. They will host Coppin State in a nonconference match up on
Tuesday at CSU Ballpark in Charleston. First pitch is slated for 2
p.m.
The CSU bats were again no match for Liberty's solid pitching,
as Steven Evans struck out 12 and gave up two earned runs off of
six hits in 9.0 innings.
Tom Burkett was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Brantley
Meier was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Drew Woodall was 1-for-3
and scored one of the Bucs' two runs.
Jesse Cadenhead took the loss for CSU, giving up five earned
runs and five hits in 6.0 innings. He falls to 1-2 on the season.
Charlie McCready faced eight batters in relief, giving up just one
hit. Tyler Vick also saw action on the mound, giving up no hits
and no runs while striking out one.
Michael Robertson was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI for the
Flames. Tyler Bream was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, as was
Casey Rasmus.
This time it was the Flames who would get on the board first,
with Rasmus scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Robertson to give LU an
early 1-0 lead. In the next inning, Bream singled up the middle to
score Ian Parmley, putting the Flames up 2-0. Bream then crossed
the plate soon after when Rasmus singled up the middle to give
Liberty a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.
The Bucs struggled to find their offense, remaining scoreless
until a triple by Burkett drove Woodall home to put CSU on the
board at 3-1 in the fifth inning. Meier then singled to the
pitcher to bring Burkett home to make the score 3-2. Though the
Bucs were in reach, they were unable to play catch up.
Liberty added to the damage in the sixth inning, as Robertson
hit a two-run homer to give the Flames the 5-2 win.
