CHARLESTON, S.C. - Elon University claimed a 6-4 victory in 10
innings over Charleston Southern Friday, March 25, scoring three
runs in the 10th to provide the winning margin. CSU's Megan Lombard
sent the game into extra innings with a home run in the bottom of
the seventh.
Charleston Southern is now 13-19 after the 1-2 series with Elon,
while the Phoenix earned the series victory and now hold a 15-11
record at present.
For the game, Elon out-hit CSU, 16-7, but the game was not
decided until the 10th inning, as the Buccaneers' defense held Elon
in check, stranding 13 runners during the contest.
Elon's Erin O'Shea (6-4) picked up the win for the second day in
a row, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, striking out four
and walking five. Morgan Dowdy (5-12) went the distance, yielding
six runs, four earned, on 16 hits while striking out five
batters.
Hayes Holdsworth earned her first two-hit game of the season,
drove in a run and scored once. Jessica Brock went 2-for-4 with one
RBI, while Melanie Stickney and Megan Lombard added one RBI apiece,
with Lombard's RBI coming via a home run.
Six Elon batters registered multiple base hits, led by Camille
Hill and Jackie Gonzalez, who recorded three hits apiece. Tomeka
Watson drove in Elon's fifth and sixth runs on what proved to be
the winning hit in the 10th.
CSU took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Brock doubled
down the right field line, plating Holdsworth. Elon tied the game
at 1-1 in the top of the second on a Carleigh Nester double that
drove in Danielle Lafferty.
Both pitchers settled in over the next two innings, as CSU went
in order in the second and third, and Dowdy held Elon scoreless in
the third and fourth innings. The Buccaneers then reclaimed the
lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Stickney drove in Jana
Matthews with a single after Matthews tripled to lead off the
inning.
Elon tied the game for the second time with a run in the top of
the sixth. Camille Hill drove in a run for the 2-2 score, and Elon
then loaded the bases. Brock fielded a one-hopper and stepped on
third base to end the inning.
Following a 1-2-3 CSU sixth, Elon took its first lead of the
game. Lafferty hit an RBI single for a 3-2 lead, and Caitlin
McGowan moved to third on the play. CSU's Lizzy Olmstead then made
two fine fielding plays at second base to record the final two outs
and keep CSU within striking distance.
The Buccaneers, down to their last out, received a clutch home
run, as Lombard drove the ball over the fence to knot the game at
3-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Elon went quietly in the eighth, and CSU followed by placing the
first two runners on base thanks to a pair of walks. O'Shea calmly
retired the side to end the threat.
The Phoenix scored three runs in the top of the 10th, as Morgan
Wright drove in Hill for a 4-3 advantage. A CSU error with two outs
extended the inning, and Watson doubled to give Elon a 6-3 lead. A
flyout ended the inning with the Phoenix ahead by three.
With the International tie-breaker in effect, CSU scored once in
the bottom of the 10th, as Holdsworth drove in Lombard. Following a
Brock single, Matthews grounded into a double play to end the
game.

The Buccaneers open conference play Wednesday, March 30, playing
host to Big South rival Coastal Carolina in a doubleheader,
starting at 2 p.m.
