CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina took a 4-1 softball victory from
Charleston Southern Wednesday, April 13 on the strength of a
Chelsea Pineda walk-off home run. The Buccaneers tied the game at
1-1 in the top of the seventh, but Pineada's seventh-inning blast
ended the contest at CCU Softball Field.
The Chanticleers and Buccaneers have concluded their season
series, as CSU won two out of three from Coastal. CSU is 17-27,
including 4-5 in conference games, this season. CCU now holds a
17-23 record and has an even 3-3 mark in Big South play.
Ashley Bagwell (9-10) kept a no-hitter alive through five and
two-thirds innings, and allowed one run on three hits. Morgan Dowdy
allowed four runs on five hits and also recorded six assists.
Jessica Brock extended her hitting streak to a team-high-tying
nine games with a single in the seventh inning. Megan Lombard and
Stephanie Sbardella also singled for CSU, and Lizzy Olmstead scored
the Bucs' lone run. Hayes Holdsowrth walked twice for CSU.
Pineda batted 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI.
Jessie Winans hit a solo home run for Coastal.
Coastal threatened in the bottom of the second inning, loading
the bases with two outs. Jazmin Daigle walked, and moved to third
on a fielding error. Stacy Snellings then walked, and Dowdy struck
out Olivia Piccrillo for the third out to maintain the blank
score.
Bagwell set down the Buccaneers in order in the top of the third
inning. Coastal placed one runner on base with a two-out single by
Pineda. Evans grounded out to first for the third out in the
Chanticleers' third.
Both pitchers continued to hold the other team down during the
fourth inning. CSU went 1-2-3, and Dowdy worked around a Pierre
single by inducing three groundouts.
Coastal Carolina took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Winans
with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Pineda followed
with a double to the wall. Evans grounded out to conclude the frame
and the Chanticleers carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth.
Holdsworth led off the sixth with a walk. Lombard broke up the
no-hitter with a single, moving Holdsworth to second. The two
runners advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch. A flyout to the left
fielder with two outs ended the frame.
A three-batter Coastal at-bat ensued, and the score stayed at
1-0 in CCU's favor going into CSU's last time to bat.
Brock singled to center as the first batter in the seventh. A
Kegley groundout moved pinch runner Lizzy Olmstead to second.
Sbardella singled on the infield, giving CSU runners at first and
third with one out. Holdsworth came to the plate following a
strikeout.
A well-executed steal play brought Olmstead home to tie the game
at 1-1. Pinch runner Melanie Stickney stole second, drawing a
throw. Olmstead broke to the plate on the throw for the tying run.
Holdsworth walked for another base runner. Melissa Adams then lined
out to end the top of the seventh.
Winans drew a two-out walk, putting runners on first and third
with two outs. Pineda hit a pitch over the left field fence for a
4-1 Coastal win.
The Buccaneers will wrap up the away portion of their schedule
with a weekend series at Winthrop Saturday, April 16 and Sunday,
April 17. Saturday's first game between the Buccaneers and Eagles
is scheduled to begin at noon. The Chanticleers travel to play at
Radford Saturday and Sunday.
