CSU Drops Decision to VMI, 9-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers lost to the Virginia Military Institute Keydets at a score of 9-1. The loss drops the Buccaneers to a record of 20-20 (7-8, BSC) and improves the Keydets to 19-17-1 (8-7, BSC). This is the second time this season that the Bucs have been swept in a Big South series.

Getting the start on the mound for Charleston Southern was senior right-hander Jesse Cadenhead. He went 4.1 innings giving up nine hits and only one earned run.

The Bucs got a good performance on the mound from Cadenhead but failed to field the ball cleanly this afternoon with four errors in today's contest. Those four errors translated into five unearned runs for VMI.

CSU broke the deadlock in the bottom of the first when a base hit up the middle from designated hitter Derek Smith that would bring in Jaren Sustar from second base.

VMI would get on the board in the second when a wild pitch plated a runner from third base. VMI would also put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning to give the Keydets a 3-1 lead.

Virginia Military Institute would continue to bolster their lead in the sixth inning by adding three more runs to take a 6-1 lead.

The Buccaneer's defense would tighten up in the sixth inning. Reliever Anthony Markham pitched three consecutive scoreless innings for CSU in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Another three runs in the top of the ninth would put the give the Keydets a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth and the Bucs were unable to mount a rally.

The Keydets had timely hitting in today's game by twice recording two-out RBI. The Keydets went 7-of-22 on the day with runners in scoring position while CSU went 1-of-8.

Charleston Southern will continue their homestand on Tuesday when they will face their crosstown rival Citadel Bulldogs. First-pitch for that game is slated for 3 p.m. at CSU ballpark.
